Meet Chanice Lorde | Actress, Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chanice Lorde and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chanice, why did you pursue a creative career?
From a young girl, I always loved family gatherings and entertaining others. That paired with my obsession with television shows like That’s so Raven made me realize I want to entertain others and bring them joy, the same way I felt watching my favorite shows.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
M I’m proud of all my creations, well most of them at least (haha). It’s beautiful to watch my work at the beginning of my career (a bit cringey too) compared to more recent works and see how I’ve grown over the years, but mostly I’m proud of my consistency.
I began with a dream of becoming an actress, but being from a small country, I really wasn’t sure what to do to get started and there weren’t many opportunities to do act. So, I decided to create my own opportunities and began writing and learning how to edit so that I could create my own short stories. After years of self paced learning, I enrolled in formal classes which prepared me to work on professional sets and become better acquainted with The audition process and show business in general.
Social media has been imperative in my growth as an artist as I’ve learnt so much from other creators and it has allowed me somewhere to host my creations from episodes, short films and the beloved girl chat videos.
By no means was this easy – it still isn’t.
In Barbados we say sometimes you have to ‘cut your nose and spoil your features’, it basically means you have to do what you have to even though you may not really want to do it. I think as a creative – financially we’d all love to be making a living from our craft, but it is a journey to get there. Having jobs which allowed me to take care of my needs financially was me doing that. I call it funding the dream!
The biggest challenge which is an ongoing one is showing up. It’s easy to get discouraged, whether it be a rejection from an audition or low views on a project which was special to me, however I chalk it up to the game. It’s just a part of the process. ‘An object in motion stays in motion’, in my opinion it’s better to have your work seen by a few people or even to get a no or not right now with an audition, rather than getting no response at all because you were too scared to even put yourself out there to be seen.
I want to tell stories that make people feel seen, that’s my goal. So many actors and creators have done that for me, and I view my work (as therapeutic as it is personally) as paying it forward – helping others by bringing joy and entertainment!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Barbados, I’d take them to St. Lawrence Gap to experience night life and a variety of food spots! Of course on the weekend we have to go to the beach, the beaches there are beautiful, I especially love Brown’s Beach or Accra. My favorite coast is the South Coast, there are so many great food spots to try so we’d probably spend the entire week on an island tour visiting monuments and trying the great food spots!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
They’re so many people who have inspired me along the way from film actresses like Taraji P Henson, youtube creators like Lilly Singh and of course coaches who have really helped my development, but I give all glory to God! He keeps me going – I pray regularly for inspiration and the drive to fulfill the dreams that He has put in my heart.
