We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlotte And Oliver Jiang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlotte and Oliver, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The biggest aspect of content creation that people might not be aware of is the constant mental energy it takes. As Home DIY & Design content creators, it requires a lot of effort to come up with and execute new ideas for our home renovation. Not only do we need to film ourselves working on new projects, but there is a pretty significant lifestyle change that takes place when your home is on camera all the time.

While we’ve always enjoyed interior design, we have to think about our home through a totally different lens as content creators. We’re constantly thinking about lighting, what project on our to do list will give us fresh and exciting content, and the aesthetics of our home.

Our personal and work lives have started to blend together as well. Even a trip to the grocery store can turn into a chance to create content, so it can be a bit challenging to find a time to rest and recharge.

We absolutely love the work we do as content creators, and have had to learn how to balance the mental and emotional energy required of this job. It takes a lot of commitment and flexibility, but we love getting to connect with our audience and share our home renovation journey.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We’re Charlotte and Oliver, the owners of the social media brand @onemoreproject. When we took the leap into homeownership in 2022, we knew our home had a lot of potential to become a beautiful space. We initially wanted to hire contractors to take on various projects, but most of the contractors that we called in our area were too busy to take on new projects, or didn’t call us back at all. With several rooms in our house that were unusable, we realized we had no choice but to roll up our sleeves and dive into the work ourselves.

We started our home renovation journey with no prior DIY experience and no immediate family members with a background in the trades. It was just the two of us, motivated to learn new skills as first-time homeowners and the desire to save money on our renovation by doing it ourselves. We’ve spent hours watching countless YouTube tutorials before starting new projects, and have learned a lot through trial and error.

Renovating a house is definitely stressful, which makes communication critical. While balancing the roles of both spouses and business partners, we’ve needed to make sure that we thoroughly discuss deadlines, tasks, design choices, etc., while continuing to nurture our relationship. By working together, we’ve learned the importance of communication, consistency, and not being afraid to try new things.

The patio is officially done!!!! This project was a LOT of work and took way longer than we expected, but we saved so much money doing it ourselves. Next on our DIY to do list: 🛠️Build new patio furniture 🌷Create a garden bed border around the patio 🫧Clean the side of our house (the brick got really dirty from the rotting deck that was there for so many years!!) #patiomakeover #paverpatio #diylandscaping #patiodecor

Through it all, our story has grown into @onemoreproject, a brand that embodies passion, growth, and partnership. We want home DIY to feel attainable and enjoyable for as many people as possible. With creativity, dedication, and a willingness to learn, we hope to inspire others to embark on their own DIY journeys, and turn their homes into a space that they absolutely love.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone were to visit Metro Detroit for a few days, we would definitely recommend a trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts (where we had our second date!) The DIA is a wonderful museum featuring classic to contemporary art. The Eastern Market is a great farmers market with fresh local produce, artisanal goods, and local vendors – a great place to visit when you are in town for a few days!

If you love nature, we highly recommend checking out Belle Isle Park or Lake St. Clair Metropark. You can follow up a nature walk with a trip to Cannelle Bakery, a local favorite, or grab dinner at Selden Standard or Flowers of Vietnam.
If you love music and theater, there are multiple jazz clubs like Cliff Bell’s or Aretha’s Jazz Cafe. There is almost always an event to see at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra or Fisher Theatre.

These options highlight the tip of the iceberg in the blend of culture and history of Metro Detroit – it’s definitely an exciting place to visit!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’re incredibly grateful for our followers, who have been such an essential part of our journey. Without their connection, feedback, and excitement for our projects, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

So, a big thank you to all of you who continue to follow along, cheer us on, and inspire us to keep creating!
