We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlotte Munson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlotte, what is the most important factor behind your success?

The first and one of the most essential step in writing / composing / performing my one woman musical “Di Lady Di” was receiving a grant from my Graduate School, University of Tennessee-Knoxville. I was awarded $10,000 to write and perform my own show. I could not have fully realized the production without this generous financial help. Sadly, the USA does not foster or support artists as much as they should, and without this grant, none of this could have happened.

In order for my show to be successful, though, the most important factor was trusting my artistic aesthetic and integrity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Wow. Well, I’m most proud of DI LADY DI and all it has accomplished. I find myself writing women’s stories exposing institutions that are seen as glamorous or ideal, and revealing the savage underbelly… but with humor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oooo so we would start with brunch at Malibu Farm Bar & Restaurant on the Malibu pier. Then we would spend the morning on the beach. In the afternoon we would head downtown and see the newest exhibit at the Broad. Afterwards we walk a block to The Conrad Los Angeles and grab food & drinks at The Beaudry Room. The Beaudry has outside seating and a glorious view of Walt Disney Concert Hall across the street. We would arrive early to Walt Disney Concert Hall to hear a seminar on the pieces about to be performed. We’d see the magnificent LA Philharmonic, then top it all off with a night cap at the charming Escodite only a few minutes drive away (and FREE gated parking!)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My therapist! But also, of course the Porters of Hellsgate. This brilliant Shakespeare Theatre company (on it’s way to becoming the first theatre company in Los Angeles to produce every one of Shakespeares plays- they’ve already done 31) helped produce my one woman musical DI LADY DI at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, then again in rep with their excellent production of Henry VIII in NoHo. Also, Hollywood Fringe veteran Scott Golden was essential as my producer. He knew all the ins & outs of the festival which, as someone new to LA and it’s theatre scene, was a godsend. I HIGHLY recommend both!
