Meet Chelsea Corbett | Makeup Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Corbett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose to pursue an artistic career because sitting at a desk was not going to cut it for me. Getting pushed into going to school for a business degree, I saw how young adults were getting persuaded to take on dreams their parents had a created for them. When taking up a non traditional career in the arts helps to express one’s true self. I originally got into makeup because I used powders and brushes to cover the imaginary bruises of bullies to make myself feel pretty. I then wanted others to feel beautiful about themselves, so I decided to take my craft of doing makeup on myself to then doing it for others. I love the feeling of enhancing someone’s original beauty to make them see how beautiful they truly are. Of course I do not think anyone needs makeup, and are gorgeous in and of themselves, but sometimes people need that little boost of confidence. I pursued this career so I may give to others the power to feel that confidence in themselves.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Makeup Artist that adheres to everyday to eccentric makeup that accentuates the eyes using colorful palettes. I work mainly on set for photoshoots, runways, or music videos, slowly easing my craft into short films. I am very versatile with a hard working personality. It was not easy to get to where I am today, I am still on an uphill battle to success myself. As there will always be improvements and new goals in life. To start a career in the arts takes a lot of dedication. It also involves putting yourself out there by networking with others and taking leaps of faith. I outsourced in many different ways, such as social media, networking events, and making connections where ever I went, taking me on a roller coaster ride of working with many different people in diverse locations and settings. I have done many collaborations to make a portfolio and connections for myself, because you always need to start off somewhere. The best lesson I’ve learned is to be your true authentic self. In doing that the people you want to work for and with will stand out from all of the others creating a healthy working environment for you and others. In a healthy working environment the true self can express itself best. Another lesson I had learned is to try different trades in your art to see what speaks to you the most. Every job you take in your field is a lesson to your future. I am here to help others build and create their own artist dream while building my own by working together to be apart of an expression in art that speaks to the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a huge outdoorsy person, so if I were to suggest some activities to do around the city I would say to visit the mountains and the beaches. There is nothing like them anywhere else in the states. I would first suggest El Matador beach for its scenic rocky ridge beach, as well as Zuma beach for a casual hang under the sun. While visiting the Malibu area you may stop for some seafood either at the casual establishment with great eats at the “Reel in Malibu” or take yourself for a fine dining experience at “Mastro’s Ocean Club” restaurant where you may sit along the windows facing out to the water and listen to one of my clients Lex Cole sing away on the piano. I would suggest a hike up Griffith tower to work off all the bread we just ate at the restaurant and take a peak at the telescopes in Griffith Observatory. Of course if you are looking for a harder hike I would then suggest either Wildwood in Burbank or Mt. Wilson in the Angeles forest where there are gorgeous views at the top. Even if you do not hike up the Angeles Mountains I would suggest a drive up there to watch the sunset. Then head to the Comedy club, Laugh Factory, or Flappers to let of some steam off with drinks and a good laugh. The first place I ever visited in LA and I suggest everyone else go as well, since it is free, is the Getty. To continue the sophisticated feeling I would suggest heading to Bacari restaurant at either the Silverlake or W. 3rd location for their infamous drinks and tapas. Another suggestion would be to get an early rise in and head to Marina Del Rey for a paddleboard through the Marina. Over there you may get the infamous Sugarfish for lunch or if you are looking for a hefty breakfast head over to Alcove for a flare on traditional breakfast or to Ubatuba Acai for a healthy option to-go. There are so many fun and interesting things to do in the city and the excitement does not stop there, there are also so many places to see just an hour or two outside the city. The list goes on.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout and thank you to my friends and family (especially my Mother) who have supported me to move just two hours away to Boston with no idea of living or job arrangements. I moved to the city to open up my possibilities and that it did. I am thankful for the “Girl Meets Magic” group who helped introduce me to so many amazing people that got me into doing makeup for designers and runways, opening up a broad new spectrum. I met this lovely woman named Ivy through one of those runways who actually gave me the shoutout to “Shoutout LA”. I want to thank Celso Enrique for connecting me with more photographers and having the opportunity to work with Wella. I want to give a shoutout to New York Institute of Beauty for allowing me to work alongside them in multiple New York Fashion shows. I want to thank Andrew Sotomayor for allowing me to be apart of his New York Faux Fur vegan fashion show where I made many great connections and my makeup was broadcasted on Good Morning America’s social media. I want to give a shoutout to an old friend that helped influence me to move to LA to continue my dream. I also want to thank my friend Mads and my partner Perry for truly supporting me in my craft and constantly trying to help me move forward in it. The list goes on who I would like to thank who have helped me along the way. Anyone I have came in contact with has been a helping hand in my journey.
