We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I come from a family on entrepreneurs, so its always been a goal of mine to have something of my own. When I started Hommegirl, my main goal was to help other women feel beautiful. I’m a mom to toddler and I also work full time so its really hard for me to make time for self care. I’m also constantly inspired by my friends (my homegirls) and how they maneuver their busy schedules! There aren’t many salons or beauty professionals that work after regular business hours and that have a safe space for children when/if moms cant find child care. I really wanted to create a space for all women and especially women like me and my friends. A lot of my clients are evening clients and those with children can come knowing their child will be entertained in a safe and clean space without them having to feel anxious about bringing them. Every woman deserves time to feel great about themselves, even those with busier schedules. Eventually, I want to expand Hommegirl into a full service salon so that we can provide more services including brows, nails, hair and much much more!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I guess what sets me apart from others is that my goal isn’t monetary. Of course, i’m building a business to be successful personally but my main goal is help and inspire other women. I use a portion of all of the money I make monthly both from sales and appointments, and i use it give back to the community. I’m very passionate about giving back and whether it be big or small – I always make sure to do something. Since i’m still starting, my portions have been smaller and i typically match that amount from my personal account and ill do something like buy a few people meals or donate to certain charities. Im really excited about building my clientele and expanding this initiative to be larger monthly community events.

Getting here wasn’t easy and it still isn’t. As a small, black owned business who is just on the brink of turning 1 year old, i’m still building my clientele and establishing my reputation. I face challenges daily. Sometime i go days without a sale or a client but i keep pushing and promoting in hopes that i’ll reach a larger audience. Im learning that it’s not easy to build a clientele. You think, i have a decent following on socials, it shouldn’t be that hard to get support! But thats not the case. Especially in the beauty industry. You have to prove your work is worth the client and it’s more than getting likes on instagram.

I want the world to know that Hommegirl is more than just a brand. We have a story and a purpose. We have a goal thats bigger than affording myself a higher lifestyle. I want to be a safe space for women, all women. A place women can go to feel great about themselves. I want to be a pillar in my community.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t go out much anymore but I do love a good meal and a great drink. I’m really a restaurant and bar kind of girl…

A few of my favorite places are:

Brunch at 1010 in Inglewood. The food is great, mimosas are bottomless and the music is always great, Its a great place to start a Sunday-Funday. Its also (and primarily) a wine bar so its a great evening wine down spot during the week.

Coffee Company and Pann’s are my two go-to breakfast recommendations. Small diners, affordable meals, good food. Also….. mimosas.

Lock & Key in K-Town. ALWAYS a good time. The vibe is always great and everyone is always there to dance and have fun. No sections, no extra dress code… Just good music, drinks and fun.

The Pheonix on Beverly. This is forsure one of my favorite bars in the city. Its dark and super ducked off and its never really crowded but its always a lot of fun. It may be cause the drinks are strong so you don’t need too many but… it’s lit. I always take my people there on any night Sunday-Sunday.

Worldwide Tacos. Look… they take forever and a day and we probably gotta eat something else while we wait on our order but the bbq salmon tacos are worth the wait and i think everyone should be patient at least once and try them lol.

Harriets Rooftop – always a good time . Whether its dinner on a quiet night or your going to the bar for a night cap. You cant really miss.

4040 is great. Its black woman owned, the food is phenomenal and its an upscale sports bar so its the perfect place to go into just to chill and hang out.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Id like to dedicate my shoutout to all of the women who inspire me to be great! My grandma, my mom, my sister and all of my hommegirls who are working hard and kicking ASS at reaching their goals and living out their dreams.

Im also very appreciative for my partner who motivated me to stop talking about it and put my brand in motion. He helped me start Hommegirl and constantly pushes me to execute my ideas. He is my other half and the hommeboy to my hommegirl.

And of course, the fire the lights my path every single day and keeps me going… my son Jax. He is the reason I do anything and everything. It’s all for him and I hope that I inspire him to go for his dreams one day, no matter how big or small.
