We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsey Cherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’m definitely somebody that needs a challenge and to me, there’s nothing more challenging than pushing your own boundaries creatively. After I create a look I’m always asking myself “What’s next? How can I go even harder? How can I improve?”. Makeup also gives me a chance to fully express myself with my appearance which is something I wasn’t able to do growing up. I feel free knowing I can wear whatever I want on my face.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think the fact that I’m always willing to push boundaries is what sets me apart from others. I understand my work isn’t for everyone, but so grateful for the people that get it and continue to vibe with me. Getting to this point definitely wasn’t easy, the more boundaries I’m willing to push the more work, money, and thoughts I have to put into the creative process. It’s definitely worth it but nowadays I see all the effort I put into creating as an investment in myself and my future.

Some lessons I’ve learned along the way would be that although discipline and consistency are key, taking care of yourself is equally as important. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve pulled all nighters or went all day without eating just to finish a look. Now my work- life balance is still very much off center but this is something I’m working on!

If the world ever is curious enough to know my story, I’d want them to know how relieving it is once you realize there is power in your uniqueness. After I really sat in the fact that it’s okay to be weird, I finally started to flourish.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely take them out in DC. We’d visit the Museum of American Art, the DC Botanical Gardens, visit my favorite boba spot (of course), and eat at a ramen restaurant. We’d visit Tyson’s Corner to shop and maybe catch a movie. Maryland isn’t the most exciting place to live in my opinion, but I’m manifesting that one day I’ll live somewhere to take my friend to the beach or the boardwalk.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Though supporters across all my platforms and my friends who always help me choose which photos to post all deserve this shoutout, I have to give this one to my parents. Since I was in elementary school they were the ones who have encouraged me to immerse myself in creativity. If it weren’t for them believing in my fine art skills and talents as a child, I would not be where I am today. They continued to encourage my shenanigans as I traveled across different art media from drawing, to painting, crochet, embroidery, violin and orchestra, anything I wanted to do they were more than happy to co-sign. I never realized how much I appreciate all their support growing up until now.
