We had the good fortune of connecting with singer/songwriter Emma Wang from Cherry Ferrari, and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.” This mindset of taking action unapologetically has given us the confidence to make connections with those we admire and learn a lot about the music industry. It’s a mantra that has allowed us to seize opportunities to meet a lot of cool people and have a lot of great experiences that we otherwise might’ve missed out on.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We started our band in sophomore year of high school and we’re currently on our first tour ever and mentally preparing to head off to college in a few weeks! Music was our escape from school and our most exciting extracurricular was playing shows around the city as soon as class ended. It was a challenge balancing school and music whilst getting introduced to the music industry—it can be hard to stay focused in class and consistently do well in school when mentally you’re in some place else whether it’s on stage or in a studio working on the next exciting idea. But now we’re headed off to New York and Los Angeles for college and on our way to make our daydreams closer to an everyday reality.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re visiting Seattle, you’re in for a treattttt. A lot of our favorites are in the Capitol Hill area. Along Pike street you can get amazing pizza at Big Mario’s (our preshow go-to) and agua frescas and nachos at Poquito’s. Dick’s and Mecca are some of the few places (that aren’t just bars) that are open past midnight where we hang out post show for hours to share laughs over junk food and milkshakes. On Tuesdays, our friend Ben hosts these fun jam sessions at the Rabbit Box in Pike Place, it’s open to any and everyone who’s up for making music with open mind.
As for LA, walking around Melrose Ave, as touristy as it is, is a lot of fun for us—while window shopping on our last visit, we came across The Council Shop where we filmed what resulted in our first viral video. My first performance in LA was at an open mic at the Kibitz Room. I remember doing it just to prove to myself I could perform in a new city! Would highly recommend to any musicians trying to get comfortable with performing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to MoPop (Museum of Pop Culture) — not only is it an amazing museum with super interactive exhibits (our favorites being the Nirvana exhibit and the Sound Lab), but MoPop also hosts annual shows that highlight youth artists called Sound Off! Which is how we got our start playing shows and how we became involved in the local music scene. MoPop provided the platform for us to put ourselves out there first time and become immersed in the local arts community. Since our first show with MoPop, I’ve volunteered as a member of their Youth Advisory Board and I actually discovered our drummer Ethan by volunteering at the most recent Sound Off!.
Shoutout to the The Residency which is a music program for up-and-coming youth artists in the Seattle area. A couple of years ago, we had the opportunity to participate in their summer cohort to write and perform music with like-minded passionate young musicians like ourselves. We learned so much from each other and our mentors, and we still keep in touch with friends from the program.
