We had the good fortune of connecting with Cheyn Roux and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cheyn, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
I think the ambiguity of what’s awaiting in life is what keeps me happy. Over the past 5 years or so I’ve been fortunate to encounter many different people, places, and opportunities where I’ve documented them all. For me, knowing that there are moments awaiting for me, both good and bad, reminds me to enjoy the present moment. So, being in the current moment and appreciating what it is has kept me happy for awhile.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What’s interesting about this question is that I feel like I had a different answer a year ago…yet, will have a different answer in a year, too. I think the main element about my work is that each image has importance to it. Over time, I’ve realized that there isn’t any thing, person, or moment you should omit from documentation. Some of my favorite writers I admire so much because they can write about the most mundane thing but make it interesting…but how can they? It’s because it’s important to them.
So for me, I’ve come to a point where wether it is the most stunning person glammed up for a portrait, or perhaps another wave crashing on the beach that’s guaranteed every 3 seconds…it has an element of importance because I felt like it was necessary to capture.
I feel like many people/artists want to capture what they feel like they NEED to, and not always particularly what they want. I’d say we have this age of “content” to blame, but I feel as if people put out their work because they feel like they need to. What I share is how I perceived the moment and it feels important to share. Don’t get me wrong, we have assignments or deadlines depending on work. However, if you can bridge the gap between your consumer and your style, I feel as if you can be on to something.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s easy to find stuff to do in Southern California! I always try to appease the guests interests, though. My best friends are on the same pace as me so if we went to the beach, hiking, a concert, or even found a spot to just hang around… I feel as if the company itself suffices the experience.
Not everyone might have the luck to experience this but I’ve come to learn that it isn’t the places that make an experience but the people you’re with. Places can enhance the experience, but the company you surround yourself remind you that the little things are what matter and not that everything that glitters is gold.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank the many friends and family that so early on in my photography career allowed me to practice and document over the years. These people took time to let me get better and allowed me to grow more into the photographer I am today and know who they are.
