Meet Chica De Luz

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chica De Luz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chica, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
It creates visibility and representation of my roots and community. Growing up I felt very misrepresented by mainstream media as a Mexican American with indigenous roots especially being alternative. Through my brand and business I want to show how diverse we are and represent other women of color who are not white passing or don’t fit into a societal norm.
Colorism, racism, discrimination is still a social issue in not only Mexico but all over the world if you’re too brown or too different. There is so many beautiful brown creatives and i aim to continue to give us the visibility and representation our people deserve.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve learned that as a Creative and Artist you have to establish a strong foundation and sense of self. You have to be your own biggest fan first and fall in love with the process. We are all on different timelines and we are not in competition. My liberation is your liberation.
Creatives are always going against the grain and mold we were given and it’s important to remember that we are collectively trying to break barriers for the next generation for their creative freedom as well.
Everything is collective and for my brand and story it is community driven.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to Olvera street! I grew up going there and it’s a great area in the heart of LA to experience culture while also supporting Mexican small businesses and vendors they have music and dancing on sundays it’s so wholesome to experience.
I have to also mention the Hollywood Forever Cemetery during their Dia de Muertos celebration. It’s one of my favorite yearly experiences and it feels surreal that they have performers, vendors, and ofrendas taking place in this iconic cemetery. Honoring death through celebration and ritual is sacred for my people and anyone visiting I would love them to witness and support the beauty of my culture.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents who sacrificed their safety to give me and my siblings a chance to dream big like many Mexican parents who have immigrated to the US. It takes so much bravery and they were an example for me to not be afraid to take risks and work hard towards my goals. The people I love Cat, Ginelie, Elias, Mayumi, Leandra, Daisy, and so many loving humans I’ve met through events, online or passing through life.
I’m grateful towards everyone who has believed in me and has shown me love in any way I take it to heart. I wouldn’t be here without my community & everyone who has followed my journey.
