We had the good fortune of connecting with Chie Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Right before I became a mom, I picked up and moved from Los Angeles to Louisville, Kentucky- in the name of love. My husband, then boyfriend, was studying dentistry at the university when we decided to start our family. It was no easy task for me, as I’d just made a mid-career decision to return to school myself, was a new USC journalism school graduate, job hunting, and all of my family, friends, and professional contacts were in L.A. and New York. I knew nothing about small town life.
We were raising our first-born in a new, small city, without family support. Still, we made it work. We had our faith. We had each other, and I had my writing. That’s when I initially started my blog, which I called Mommafied. To me, Mommafied means confidently stepping into your role as a powerful woman and mom.
Initially my blog posts were about my experience in Kentucky, and navigating everyday working mom life, with our sweet daughter who was dealing with food allergies. That’s what first motivated me to seek out healthier options, which eventually led to me exploring vegan life, creating a vegan blog, making plant-based sleep masks, and expanding it into a wellness shop.
I kept my blog private, until I realized years later after moving back to L.A., that sharing my story and what I’d learned could help other busy moms like me. I wasn’t the only mom striving to create healthy/vegan options for their families with limited time, on a budget, or trying to find easy, natural ways to be intentional about self-care.
When the pandemic hit, I found myself in a place of burnout; juggling work, while homeschooling our two kids. I knew that relaunching my Mommafied blog would be a great way to hold myself accountable on my health and self-care journey, and after building community, it has grown into a platform that helps moms put their oxygen masks on, first.
Mommafied is now a vegan blog and wellness shop specifically focused on helping busy, working moms over 35 who are struggling with how to create space for consistent plant-based living. I offer simple plant-based food and wellness product solutions to help moms feel rejuvenated. My wellness shop is stocked with products that I create and source from other small, women-owned businesses. I sell our products on my website, Etsy, at a wellness center, at pop-up events and Farmers Markets throughout Southern California.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There are many resources for new parents when it comes to taking care of our children. There are advice books and communities for days! But there’s far less content or product solutions that speak to the wellness of moms themselves.
Although as mothers we are responsible for a lot, we are the ones that are rarely checked on. Oftentimes we need that support, crave understanding, and community.
Mommafied steps in where other mainstream wellness brands don’t by focusing on optimizing the health of working-class moms over 35, whose sense of self-care has been put last.
We don’t necessarily always have access to private chefs, personal trainers, full-time nannies, and personal assistants, but we still want to live a healthy, abundant, stress-free, intentional life of wellness. We want those plant-based recipes and beauty products to be on rotation, just not with all of those fancy tools and ingredients. We need to keep things streamlined and simple, but that doesn’t mean we don’t want in.
Being a mom and solopreneur has certainly been challenging, but it’s also shown me the value of maximizing my time, leaning heavily on faith, and the beauty of taking calculated risks.
I see my brand as one that’s constantly maturing and evolving to fit the needs of our consumers. Mommafied started off as a personal mom-blog, evolved into a health and wellness blog, and has now grown into a vegan blog and wellness shop. I’m excited to see what the next iteration of my brand will be. I’m most proud of our growth and am excited to help more busy women access plant-based solutions to simplify their lives. This includes planning events, like a vegan retreat for moms in the future.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LOL, most of my besties are also moms, so after the kids went to bed, one of us would likely hit up Sprouts, crack open a bottle of wine, (a good vegan one, like Avaline created by Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power). I’d make a veggie-friendly charcuterie board, chat, laugh, listen to 90’s hip-hop and reminisce all in the comfort of my home. Snoozefest, I know.
When venturing out some of my favorite kid-friendly restaurants in L.A. with vegan options include:
-Green Table Cafe: (Great acai bowls, smoothies & croissants!)
-Lady Byrd Cafe (Magical ambience)
-The Grain Cafe: (I love their choose your own plates)
-Cafe Gratitude: (The names of the dishes are uplifting)
-Simply Wholesome: (100% vibes. Their juices, Jamaican patties & adjacent wellness shop-yes!)
-Juicebae: (Delicious juice combos, their vegan clam chowder is hittin’ & they sell great herbal supplements)
I also love taking my kids to our local Farmers Markets and Underwood Family Farms in Moorpark, where you can pick fresh fruit and vegetables straight from the land.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my family, my husband and children, for their constant love and dedication. They graciously allow me the time and space to build my business. They support, challenge me, and encourage me to level up. They are my biggest loves and cheerleaders!
I’m grateful for all of the women in our Mommafied community, who support my business by attending our events, reading the blog, buying our products, spreading the word, and showing us love on social media.
I’d also like to give a big shoutout to Vegan Exchange LA for being the first company to take a chance on us and invite us to be a vendor at their weekly events.
