We had the good fortune of connecting with China Givens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi China, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risks are scary but I wouldn’t be where I am today without taking risks. I sometimes have to remind myself as I make plans to expand my businesses that it will only happen if I’m willing to take the risk and step out on faith. Big risk, big reward.

What should our readers know about your business?
I own 2 businesses. 1. The Hair Bar of Beverly Hills, my own full service salon studio located in Beverly Hills. I specialize in styling, especially textured hair. 2. The Hair Bar Collection, my line of flat irons, heat resistant mats and parting combs. My road to where I am now in my career wasn’t easy. I worked hard, sacrificed, kept my eye on my goals and jumped at opportunities without knowing if I was completely ready. When I first opened The Hair Bar of Beverly Hills in 2017, I worked an extra 1-2 jobs to make sure I can afford the rent for my studio and my other bills because my clientele wasn’t where it is today. When Covid happened, it pushed me to go forward with the The Hair Bar Collection. It made me super proud to come out with products I can 100% stand behind. The sales have been going great, but I’m still in the process of building it to a bigger brand. My story is still being written and I’m not done yet!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from Inglewood, Ca., the city of Champions. We not only house The Forum, The Sofi Stadium and soon to be Clippers Stadium but we have some of the best food spots around. We have many black owned food spots and local stores so I would just say try whatever you see because it’s a good chance that it’ll be good. We’re also 10mins away from the beach, bordered by the airport and many other popular cities, Westchester, Culver City which houses The Fox Hills Mall, South LA, Hawthorne and more. You could have an eventful trip without going far at all.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother and children gets my biggest shoutout. Growing up watching my mother be a strong women, encouraged me to be the same and I also learned a lot about hair from her. My children keeps my fire lit because I want them to have more opportunities and access to things that I may not have had growing up. My dad for showing me I can be involved in many things I’m interested in. I definitely think all my teachers in Cosmetology school get some credit for sure because they went above and beyond, especially Ms. Alejandra Peña.
