Meet Chise Up | Hip-Hop Artists

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chise Up and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chise, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Music has always been important in our lives. Daws started writing his own Raps when we were in Second Grade, and Classic has loved listening to great lyricists since around the same time. The SOUNDTRACK of the Late 80s – 90s WAS Hip-Hop, and the genre just got a hold of us to the point we knew we eventually had to be a part of it somehow.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Chise Up stands for Chicago Stays Elevated… It was a slogan we used when we were in College, just reminding each other and anyone who would listen, that Chicago isn’t the rhetoric the News makes it out to be, which is negative. We have to stay elevated, and always rise above the chaos.

We’re a Hip-Hop DUO, which is rare in an of itself, because most Acts are individuals or bigger groups. We think the same, often, yet we attack the track in very different ways, and that contrast of sounds & lyrical styles, blend seamlessly.

Daws started off as a Solo artist, which he didn’t like, then Classic was added, along with another Artist from Chicago, but Daws & Classic realized they worked better and had more of an organic feel to the process, together, and we became a duo.

A lesson we learned was not to PAY FOR PLAY. We used to do these showcases where we had to purchase a certain number of tickets, and have them sold, just so we could perform. We HATED doing that, so we started putting on our own shows, and we never charged the artists anything to come out and showcase their talent.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The studio, our own Loud Pack Show, A rooftop restaurant downtown , The White Sox game, A backyard kickback, and Bars in the Wicker Park neighborhood
