We had the good fortune of connecting with Chloe Saavedra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chloe, what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a drummer first, started playing drums when I was 5, and picked up songwriting later when I was 18. I’ve had a strange life of touring as a kid with my sister, Asy in our band, Smoosh. Because of this long career I’ve witnessed so much change in the music industry, and it’s challenging to always remember who I am and not get sidetracked by trends or other versions of success. I just try to always come back to myself and remember why I do what I do and what I love most about it. For example, I started playing drums in the early 2000s in the sort of last breath of an anti-corporate world, we still felt strongly about artists being authentic and not selling out. In that time, signing to a major label was considered selling out, because at that point you would be exchanging your authenticity for monetary gain. The artists I loved would never do that. We had a lot of comradery in the indie music scene, especially in Seattle where I’m from. But now, we are in a very different era, I find it harder to express who I am in this time, because everything is so intrinsically commercial. I’m a little disheartened by it but trying to find ways to keep that indie spirit alive by playing more live shows, improvising, taking risks and letting people be a part of that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would let it be spontaneous. See how we feel and go from there. But maybe take them to some of my favorite places, Dan Sung Sa, The Dresden, Red Lion, Angeles Forest trails, my favorite flea market, biking down my favorite street, maybe doing karaoke.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Kevin Hickey, AKA Zhone. My producer and collaborator on music. He is a visionary with sound and music and I love creating music with him.
