We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Browne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, what do you attribute your success to?
Probably persistence. It always comes down to the small steps each day that lead to the goal rather than the major strides. Of course you can’t have one without the other.
It’s always best to have a clear attainable goal and a desired deadline in mind.
Then you analyze what will it take to get there?
Then breakdown what steps each day needs to be taken to reach that goal, and each day try to stay on task.
Of course things don’t always work out, sometimes you hit a few dead ends, but by the sheer fact that you are putting the time in each day will make the difference.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up making movies with friends. My favorite thing to play with was an old camcorder that I would borrow from my parents, and then eventually saved my allowance to purchase my own.
We would make hundreds of strange and interesting sci fi movies that I feel has given me an instinct for story telling and pacing. It is part of my blood at this point.
I have also run my own Visual Effects and Animation Studio for 9 years, and whomever has run their own company knows you have to be extremely resourceful and wear many hats.
I take this approach to my filmmaking. I am always researching innovative ways of doing things, that I take to my work. It is my fun, my craft, my hobby and my profession.
BUT after running some of the largest animation studios in the world, I have also learned to delegate and build efficiencies to minimize manual labor and maximize artist’s creative freedom.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to a filmmaking networking event, with red carpet, the full royal treatment.
Then do a little surfing from a rental place on Venice beach (easy spot to learn).
And finally drinks at a rooftop patio somewhere.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Brent Friedman is a successful writer and futurist. He has been a great mentor in my story telling and how to navigate the industry.
There are many people who have been very supportive at my place of work SONY PICTURES ANIMATION who have been very encouraging.
