We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, what are you inspired by?
I find a little bit (or a lot) of inspiration in everything. I consume a lot of media and after a few minutes I’ll find myself itching to get back to writing another page of my comic WEREWOLF FRANKENSTEIN. Even the original concept of that series came from being inspired by the Universal Monsters and wanting to express my deep fandom for those movies in a totally original way. Still more inspiration comes from friends and family, especially my son. Staying connected to real people and real problems is my way of pushing back the apathy that social media encourages.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Before I was a comic book writer, I was a comic book editor making the biggest and bestselling comics–award winning even! In comics, editors function like producers–they’re more involved with the creative than checking your spelling but are essentially behind-the-scenes in that, most people don’t think of them as being part of the process. Making the transition from editor to writer has been really hard, maybe even harder than if I had never been an editor in the first place. Hard to say why that is–why industry gatekeepers can’t judge the quality of my comics on the smiles of my readers that I see first hand at comic conventions across the country–but that is what I’m currently up against. In time, I know that I will be undeniable.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from Queens, New York. Anybody visiting me just wants to go to the beach. But after that I’d take them on a tour of all the best comic shops in SoCal, starting with Collector’s Paradise! Any of the three locations–heck, maybe all three. They have a top-notch selection and the kindest and most knowledge staff in the business.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Truly, I could not create all the great comics I’ve published without the community I’ve found on Kickstarter. There’s an incredible audience out there that is excited to throw their support (in the form of money!) behind weird and independent comic books like mine. From my previously mentioned WEREWOLF FRANKENSTEIN series, to my most recent comic COMMANDER IN CHAINS, to labors of love like ALL-NEGRO COMICS 75th ANNIVERSARY EDITION, each one has a successful Kickstarter campaign to thank for it. In fact, the first comic I ever completed was called FEARLESS FUTURE and that also happened thanks to Kickstarter backers. Frankly, my story would be completely different without this platform.
