We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Aguilar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
It is actually very simple, my “end goal” is what i feel most Artists want. To be able to live off of my work. At the end of my career i hope to have recognition. I don’t want to be famous or even worse, a celebrity, i just want to have a simple life doing what i love to do, paint.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I cannot claim that my work is 100% different from the rest because I, like Picasso, steal from where I can but the end result is my own. My inspiration comes from many places, via other paintings or literature for example. What I feel I do that is different from my contemporaries is the fact that I am currently searching for a new way of painting and showing the world as I know it. I am searching for a new language. Most people tell me it has all been done before,I just happen to disagree. I strongly feel like I am almost there. What I see right now is that we are in the ‘Age of Remakes”. Everywhere you see people are ‘recreating” things, whether movies or music, etc… In the case of painting people are just bluntly remaking the same paintings or painting the same individuals (celebrities) over and over. I don’t mean people aren’t creative, what I mean is people nowadays are LAZY. No one wants to put themselves out there and where themselves on their sleeves. Artists today sacrifice self-expression for the sake of being a part of what the art world is now, so they become “Political Artists” and in my opinion they bastardize everything that is good and holy and have changed the true essence of what panting was. So I, do my best to create work that is original and true to who I am. I believe art is about ‘Self-Expression” and I don’t see that in the art market today. Everything I paint has narrative and tells a story. That story is personal to me and I am expressing myself to the world, as many of the great Painters and Artists have done before our time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first thing I would do I take them out of Los Angeles (The Cultural Siberia of the World). I would take them to small towns all around California to really take in the true “Spirit of the West-Coast”. For example i’d take them to Cambria, Solvang, Eureka, Big Sur and Needles.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is one person I could not be doing this without, that person is my life partner/ my soul mate/ my girlfriend, Jen. Everything has been possible because of Her unconditional support and love that she gives me. I love you baby!
