We had the good fortune of connecting with Christine Maryfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christine, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I actually studied mechanical engineering in undergrad and it wasn’t until I was almost done that I realized I had no outlet for creativity within this career path. I started an internship for a global defense company that was considered to be the golden ticket of engineering internships and cried the whole first week when I realized I was going to be glued to a cubicle desk, sit in lonely labs, and work with people who hated their lives for the rest of my life (dramatic maybe, but I’m a gemini). I still completed my degree however because it was really important that I prove to myself that I COULD do it. So summer of 2022, I got my BS in mechanical engineering and started full-time with Northrop Grumman. After a year and a half of working full-time, making fashion and sewing videos on Instagram and TikTok, and starting to book social media management clients, I quit to pursue my social media marketing agency, Maryfield Media, full-time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business, Maryfield Media, is an Instagram-focused boutique social media marketing agency that curates and delivers value-proposition led marketing strategies. Using our extensive research on target audiences and our clients’ brands, we create a stand-out social presence through the power of storytelling, creative video editing, and compelling copywriting.

We know how to get results and turn ghost followers into active participants in brand conversations. We know what to say to activate followers to take action, and to get people to buy. I’m most proud of the results we’ve gotten our clients, like generating thousands of dollars in high-ticket sales, growing accounts by +10x, and increasing website traffic by +10x.

Leaving my corporate engineering job left me in shambles for months when money scarcity crept in and returning to corporate seemed more and more like my inevitable ending. I’ve had clients who’ve made me cry, days that made me want to burn my business to the ground, and friends and family who didn’t believe in me, in turn making me not believe in me. I continue to work through this as I hold onto my sense of “why,” which is to own everything I create, have the freedom to work how I please, and have meaningful work that leaves me feeling fulfilled at the end of the week and eager to take on the next.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is to worry first about getting clients and worry second about quite literally everything else.

I want people to know that you can start a business with any background, even if it’s completely irrelevant. There’s not much that I learned in my engineering degree that I can apply to my business other than my work ethic. But I wanted this, so I made it happen.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I actually just moved here to Venice from San Diego, but my favorite spots so far are Baja Cantina after Venice Run Club on Wednesdays, and Zinque has the best French food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my friend Natalia Trevino Amaro who’s an independent sustainable fashion designer, YouTuber, and content creator. She’s an incredible designer, educator, entrepreneur, and community-builder. I recently became acquainted with her but we’d been mutuals for a while and I originally discovered her through a viral YouTube video she made about starting her online fashion brand at the age of 19 or 20. Shoutout Natalia, you’re killing it always.

I’d also like to shout out Ellen Mackenzie, my first business coach from whom I purchased my social media marketing course from. She is someone who’s worked her way up from the bottom and leads her students by example. I admire the business Ellen has built for herself, the risks she takes, the way she operates and shows up for her business, and I’m just very grateful to have been able to learn from her.
