We had the good fortune of connecting with Chrome Masugina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chrome, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I do all of this myself! Sure from time to time I’ve had a few friends offer to take photos for me, however on a regular basis, I’m my own marketer, photographer, designer, ambassador, promoter, writer, actor, editor, and much more! I’m very happy that I can proudly say with my chest that I’m a one man army, I’ve taught myself a lot of skills that I’ve been able to use in order to get this business started from the ground up and to make a name for myself in order to confidently say that I have nobody “managing” me or booking my shows for me. I’m the one who puts my foot in the door, and requests the attention that I deserve for the hard work I put into just about everything that I do!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being an artist with more than one talent has definitely proven itself to be a challenge I’d love to take on for the rest of my life with a smile on my face. I started making my masks at a very difficult time in my life, and the fact that I’ve continued to stay true to myself and stay true to my brand that I’ve created, has definitely motivated me and given me the strength to continue being myself and really showing the world what I have to offer as far as the many talents that I’ve taught myself from a very young age. I don’t have a marketing team or a promotion team like many of the other “artists” you see gaining notoriety nowadays on the mainstream media. It’s a pay to play game that costs a lot of money, however if you earn the renown by word of mouth and putting yourself on those stages, the natural progression towards fame, appears to be a much more rewarding path rather than the latter. It definitely was not easy, and it will never be easy unless you make it easy for yourself. Times are getting a lot tougher than what they used to be, you have to have thick skin in order to continue down the path of being an artist, especially in this day and age. Many people like to criticize and judge artwork based off of the very little knowledge that they have on whatever art they’re being shown on Instagram, TikTok, or whatever media that people like to use in order to display what they love to do creatively. Having self-love and being able to motivate yourself to do better and to get better at what your passions are, is really the key to pushing through the tough times. I’ve learned that keeping your circle small will often benefit you in most cases as opposed to having a wider circle full of people willing to take advantage of your kindness and your creativity for their own benefit. They say it’s lonely at the top for a reason. However, it’s also lonely at the bottom, you just have to choose what kind of loneliness you’d be comfortable having at the end of the day haha, Success is a double edged sword in itself. NBN stands for never be normal, and I’ve been coining the phrase ever since I was 11 years old, so I’m proud to say that over the 10 years I’ve been keeping these words near and dear to my heart, I haven’t let go of them and won’t any time soon. They’ve certainly gotten me in more rooms than I ever thought I could alone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When it comes to Las Vegas, I love going to the strip, however I do love visiting the outlets and the malls that the area has to offer. In Henderson, there’s a very nice mall, the Galleria at sunset, conveniently located about 20 to 30 minutes away from the outlets that I usually shop at. I used to walk the mall alone to look at all of the shops and to see what they had to offer in order to price check before I went to the south premium outlets to go mosey around in boredom. Usually the outlets have excellent food selections to choose from if you’re hungry, so I definitely suggest visiting there if you ever just want to spend some time walking around through a decently sized shopping center.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shannon Corbett! She is definitely an older sister to me because I’ve known her ever since I was little. I think I was about 11 years old when I had first met her at the boys and girls club and became friends with her ever since. We’ve gone to the same theater troupe and acted in musicals and plays at nearly the same time! And she’s worked so hard to get to where she is now on the big screen! Keep going sis, you’re doing an amazing job as always and I hope you never stop being as amazing as you are!
