We had the good fortune of connecting with Chueh-Hui (Andrea) Huang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chueh-Hui (Andrea), how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. My parents believed in an open-minded environment that encouraged me to explore various cultures through active learning and travel. From a young age, I engaged in diverse activities and acquired various skills such as calligraphy, painting, dance, figure skating, and playing musical instruments. These experiences enriched my artistic perspective and empowered me to convey my thoughts through art.
For years, I dedicated myself to the film industry, gaining valuable production experience worldwide. However, my passion for narrative storytelling led me to Los Angeles two years ago. Drawing upon my background in filmmaking, I possess a unique lens for discovering universal stories that resonate with international audiences. Additionally, my cultural roots and life experiences grant me a distinctive flavor that I can infuse into my art and films.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my career in commercial production. Although I deeply cherish my time spent producing remarkable commercials, my true passion has always been narrative storytelling. This passion led me to embark on a new chapter in my filmmaking journey when I relocated to Los Angeles and enrolled in the Film and TV Production MFA program at the University of Southern California.

During my tenure at USC, I discovered my profound affinity for the art of editing. I found immense joy in the creative process of sculpting emotions and scenes using visual elements and sound. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working on extraordinary projects that tackle significant subjects, such as preserving Armenian traditional music, exploring themes around abortion, and narrating the journey of an Ethiopian shepherd’s transformation into a Hollywood filmmaker.

My career path has been far from straightforward. It has been seven years since I made the switch from my undergraduate major in economics, and I have navigated through various roles and cultural shifts over the years. However, my unwavering love for storytelling serves as the driving force that keeps me focused on evolving into a better filmmaker, even during challenging moments. What I’ve gleaned from this journey is the importance of persistence and the courage to step out of my comfort zone. I’ve learned that articulating my aspirations to others is paramount. People are invariably eager to lend their support when they witness my passion and positive attitude.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
Our day will start with a delightful brunch at Republique Café Bakery, followed by the picturesque Runyon Canyon trail and a mouthwatering dinner in Koreatown. To cap off the evening, we would head to the Griffith Observatory. The mesmerizing night skyline, with its twinkling lights, never fails to leave me in awe, regardless of how many times I’ve witnessed it.
Another day on our itinerary would involve a visit to the stunning El Matador State Beach in Malibu. If time permits, we might also explore the renowned Getty Center. Come evening, we indulge in a delectable dinner at Manchego, known for its exquisite tapas.

For art enthusiasts, I highly recommend the Joshua Tree HWY 62 Open Studio Art Tours, a captivating event that unfolds every October over three weekends. This unique experience allows you to connect with and converse with a multitude of incredible artists in their studios or homes, making for a truly enriching adventure!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am deeply grateful to my former production company for affording me remarkable opportunities to contribute to exceptional projects. Beginning as an executive assistant and subsequently earning a promotion to executive producer, I had the privilege of overseeing the production of numerous renowned commercials. Some of our clients included Land Rover, Jaguar, McDonald’s, Pepsi, and more. Furthermore, I had the distinct honor of collaborating with esteemed award-winning actresses and celebrities like Tang Wei, Dongyu Zhou, Elane Zhong, Yang Yang, and Ming Xi.
The company’s unwavering trust in me allowed me to undertake demanding projects that pushed my boundaries and facilitated rapid personal and professional growth. These invaluable experiences have molded me into a more resilient and imaginative filmmaker.
