We had the good fortune of connecting with Cindy Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cindy, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I firmly believe in the importance of trying. One can attempt and stumble, but the real failure lies in not making the effort. For much of my life, I heeded the advice of others, trusting in their wisdom, and often rightfully so. However, I’ve come to realize that tuning into my own inner voice has propelled me farther than I ever imagined. It required significant introspection and the recognition that my art had a voice of its own, one that resonated with others in need of creative inspiration. The exuberant persona that once landed me in trouble during my school days unexpectedly became my greatest asset. Through embracing my true self and fully accepting who I am, I found love and forged a path to entrepreneurship—a journey that has since become the passion of my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I find joy in turning chaos into artistry. Experimenting with unconventional materials is my forte, as exemplified in my recent installation at the South Gate Museum of Art. For this project, I crafted a dough base to sculpt a tree, enhancing its texture with a faux leather effect made from repurposed brown paper bags. Throughout the creation process, observers were perplexed by my methods until the final masterpiece unveiled its true form. Such experiences are commonplace in my life, extending even to my plant business. I diverge from traditional plant cultivation by integrating my artistic flair into unique plant homes. My Instagram page challenges norms by emphasizing the fun and therapeutic aspects of plant care, a departure from the standard botanical discourse. Building my brand was no easy feat; it demanded a steep learning curve in business management, a domain overlooked in my psychology education. Yet, with perseverance and guidance, I navigated these hurdles, adapting and evolving to foster growth. My journey serves as a testament to the importance of authenticity and resilience, showing others that embracing one’s individuality eventually attracts like-minded souls who champion your success.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend were visiting LA for a week, our mornings would kick off at my go-to coffee spot, Postre’s in Bellflower. They offer a unique twist on coffee and boast an enticing breakfast menu. As someone who appreciates the simple pleasures, one of my favorite haunts is the Flower Mart in Downtown Los Angeles. Here, I relish in sipping freshly pressed orange juice from a local vendor while perusing the flower district for one-of-a-kind plants for my mobile shop. It’s always a delight to witness someone immerse themselves in the beauty and fragrance of fresh-cut blooms. Following our floral escapade, we’d indulge in the flavors of my culture at La Pupusa Urban Eatery, where my good friends craft the most delicious pupusas. For some well-deserved pampering and relaxation, we’d make our way to Athenea Beauty Company in Downey. With its incredible sound bath studio and top-notch beauty salon, it’s the ultimate retreat. And to cap off the night with unforgettable memories, we’d hit up a House Parties in da 90’s event at a local club, dancing the night away with friends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are countless individuals whom I am deeply grateful for and would love to acknowledge. My family and friends have been an unwavering source of support, playing an indispensable role in the success of my business. They stand by me not only during triumphs but also during setbacks, offering encouragement and solace when needed most. Amidst the journey of building my business, one person stands out as a beacon of unwavering support my friend Sam. He has stood by me through the highs and lows, urging me to pursue my goals and dreams while maintaining a grounded perspective. Over time, he has evolved into both a cherished friend and a trusted mentor. Embarking on my latest endeavor, I’ve delved into the creation of a book chronicling the profound impact my plants have had on my journey towards self-love. Guiding me through this transformative process is my invaluable mentor, Davina, whose unwavering support and wealth of knowledge have infused this project with joy and excitement. Her expertise has not only made the journey enjoyable but has also enriched the depth and authenticity of the narrative. I am also immensely grateful for the participants in my workshops, whose enthusiasm and dedication breathe life into Crafting with Cindy. They are the heart and soul of my endeavor, and without them, the success I enjoy today would not be possible.
