Meet CJ Nussbaum | Thrift Enthusiast

We had the good fortune of connecting with CJ Nussbaum and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CJ, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
One of my favorite quotes is “Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely.” by Auguste Rodin. I’ve always tried to keep that as my mantra throughout the years. As cliché as it sounds, life is too short to be afraid to try new things and start new projects. There will never be an absolutely perfect time to begin a new journey, so might as well take the leap of faith! I found something I love and am passionate about (shopping secondhand, vintage, upcycling) and wanted to share that with others who felt the same. And that’s how my small business came to be. My small business is a small, small business. Right now, it’s just me running the show. But, that’s OK! Part of the agreement I made with myself when starting this endeavor was that I was going to let it take the time it needed to grow at the rate it’s going to go. Of course, I set goals for myself so I can see if I’m making progress, but it is more important to me that the work is enjoyable and worthwhile. I am learning all parts of this business at a scale that works for me in the moment I’m in. It isn’t easy – there are a lot of ups and downs and failures that don’t necessarily get mentioned on social media. However, I think about my favorite quote and remind myself that I’m using this moment not only as a learning experience but also an opportunity to grow in ways I could have not imagined. Keeping that in mind gives me the perspective to keep going. As long as I’m still having fun and able to connect with others, that’s all that matters.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sure! “The Leo Collective” curates and sells secondhand and vintage household goods. We strive to find quality, unique preloved pieces that deserve a good home and believe in the power of thrifting and upcycling to create a more sustainable future. Our inventory is always changing as we generally acquire items individually! That means when an item is available, that is the only one we have in stock. We curate drops every week which demonstrate how mixing pieces from different decades and styles can work. TLC’s style is eclectic and practical. We love pops of color blended with warm tones and natural textures. We love showcasing items that can be used for more ways that the original purpose. All of our items are intentionally sourced and meant to bring joy into your home for many years to come.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am (proudly) born and raised in Southern California, but this question is tough to answer! One of the most beautiful things about Los Angeles and neighboring counties is that you can truly find any kind of entertainment experience, authentic melting pot of culture, and delicious cuisine all in one place while enjoying incredible weather. But, if I had to pick a few key things to do: visit the LACMA, go wine tasting in Malibu, eat some In-N-Out, and go to Disneyland.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely want to dedicate this shoutout to my family, friends, and all the wonderful new folks I’ve met throughout the last few years who have supported this little business in so many ways! From purchasing an item, attending a pop up, sharing a story… every interaction brings me so much joy and motivates me to keep going. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I especially want to shoutout my husband, Jon, who is always so supportive and helpful in all my endeavors! Thank you for being the best partner and “intern”. Haha. Lastly, a shoutout to my love-bug-rescue-dog, Leo. The name “The Leo Collective” was inspired by the love he has brought to our home. You could almost say he came to us secondhand. 🙂
