We had the good fortune of connecting with CJ Pitts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CJ, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I would have to say the sacrifices that are made behind the scenes. In the music industry being an artist is tough, for the fans they just get new music to enjoy and help them through life, but on the opposite side what they don’t know is the time away from home and our families that we sacrifice to make music happen. The joys of life like going out with friends and taking vacations and just having that work life balance doesn’t really happen as often for an artist.
You have to stay creative, stay working and put those pleasures to the side because you’re only as good as your last song and in this microwave era we live in now. The consumer wants new music if not everyday then for sure every week or you’re forgotten.
Sacrifices are definitely something outsiders may not be fully aware of and the extent of them because it’s our job to only show you the music and the joys of creating.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a musician based in LA, California. I’m a songwriter, singer, and rapper. I love creating my own songs for the world to hear in as many styles/genres that I can tap into. I usually make either RnB, HipHop, or Pop music but I branch out when given the opportunity.
I think what sets me apart from others is the versatility I have when it comes to the styles of music and the choices I make sonically. I also try to keep my lyrics clean even in the mainstream world which doesn’t happen to often and I think that’s one thing that helps me stand out.
I grew up in church heading music all my life from the band to the choirs and even my family is full of singers and writers and musicians so it was all around me. I took those skills and went to a music college where I really came into my own as an artist and started developing my own sound and style til this day. It has been challenging taking this path, from learning the education side of music to just being in an industry that’s over saturated and very competitive has been a journey.
I’ve learned to just focus on me and what my path is to success and to stay working and stay improving to be the best artist I can be. The rest will fall into place if I work hard and stick my own plans and worry about my own destiny in this industry..
I want the world to know that music is my passion and I really hope to reach the hearts of many through the lyrics and melodies that God gives me to put out in the world. I really want to make an impact and leave a positive legacy in the world when I retire and when I’m gone. I’m an advocate for chasing your dreams and following your heart and happiness and that’s the message I want to spread into the world.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a week I’d for sure take them to a few beaches like Laguna Beach, Palos Verdes and probably Malibu. I would have to take them for a drive up the coast to Santa Barbra and back down to San Diego to get different feels and scenery that this state has to offer. The nature here is beautiful so we’d spend a ton of time outdoors. I would take them to Griffith Observatory, catch a few local concerts in the city, and depending on the time of year we’d go up to Wrightwood to do some snowboarding so they can really get the full experience.
I would take them to some of my fav food spots for Mexican and Thai cuisine. I’d also take them for some good bbq at Grand Central Market, and Korean bbq at Shinobu for the overall experience. Lastly I’d take them to Huntington Library for the best garden in the state in my opinion and also the Getty Villa. Couldn’t forget to show them Venice and Santa Monica as well for some tourist type of interactions and that would probably cover a week’s worth of activities and adventures.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom deserves a huge shoutout and recognition for all the hard work and sacrifices she made over the years for me as a single mother. She did the best she could to take care of me, raised me up right and has my back at all times through the ups and downs. Seeing her happy and proud is a huge motivation of mine to become successful and achieve greatness. I want to take great care of her the way she did for me.
