Meet CJ Thompson | Singer, Songwriter & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with CJ Thompson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CJ, what do you want your legacy to be?
My legacy…is something I’ve never thought about. The first thing that comes to mind about legacy is a question. Did I fulfill what God wanted for my life? What I mean by that is asking myself did my purpose and my passion align enough to affect as many as people I could while on this earth.
1 Peter 4:10 says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” I hold that scripture so dear to me because I am so grateful for the things God has done in my life and for the people around me, that the very least I can do is truly use whatever gifts he gave me to really affect other people in a positive and long lasting way. He also gave me a heart that loves so deeply. I really care for everyone I come in contact with and yearn to make an impact on people I haven’t met yet or maybe never will. My gift of creativity in music allows me to believe in my craft and it creates an avenue for me to love on people or inspire pure love in as many people I can touch; no matter the number. I believe my purpose on this earth is to LOVE as much as I can, along with the fore mentioned scripture. I take on the duty of utilizing my gift to making people smile, dance, sing, reminisce, reflect, change and most of all….LOVE.
So what do I want my legacy to be? How do I want to be remembered? It would be an honor and mission accomplished to know others are using their gifts and talents to encourage love. Even if only one person looks in the mirror, closes their eyes and takes a step on the path of love, then that alone will fill me with joy. I just want to be remembered as a man that loved to love, and used his gift to inspire love in others…big and small, young and old.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am just a young man who grew up blessed to have been introduced to some great music, largely involving one Michael Jackson. He is my biggest musical inspiration bar none. The emotion he displayed on stage and in his music motivates me to create the way I do. Other creatives like Teddy Riley, Justin Timberlake, Zapp & Roger, The Deele and many more play a very important role in what my creative approach is. I’ve learned so many lessons by not even opening my mouth, but just using my eyes and ears in every situation that I’m in. Quality being one of the more profound ones. Quality of your music and performance is so key and vital to making a lasting impression, but much more importantly… quality of the person you are takes you much further than any song ever can. Your heart is what matters in most cases than anything else. My Granddad, God rest his soul, had such a huge heart. He and I were so close and still to this day I hear stories of people telling me about how good of a man he was. He was also never one to shy away from showing his emotion. A vulnerability most men cannot succumb to. He taught me that it was okay to cry, okay to not understand, okay to make a mistake and own it and be better the next time. He plays a huge part in who I am as a man and also in how I write. I just make music that feels good to my spirit and I don’t finish anything that doesn’t fulfill me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate this Shoutout to my Mom, my Granny, my sister and all the beautiful women in my family. Women are so important in this world. Too often undervalued and under-appreciated. A big thank you to all the amazing women around the world! You inspire me and so many others.
