We had the good fortune of connecting with Claire Norris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Claire, why did you pursue a creative career?
As the oldest of three kids, I always took the lead in trying to entertain my younger siblings. I wrote books and comics, made short films, and came up with new games for us to play. I love making my family laugh, and the community aspect of working in animation is one of my favorite things about working in this industry.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I come from a live action film background, so I didn’t really start my art education until after I had already completed my undergrad degree. I’m so glad I had mentors who recommended that I take my first storyboarding class. It opened up my world and made me less afraid to learn about art. For the last 3 years, I’ve been working on my art fundamentals, writing scripts and short stories, and drawing comics and story sequences while working in animation production. The best advice I was ever given is that nothing is wasted time, and you can always change your mind. No matter what you are doing now, even if you feel stuck, you are living through something valuable. And you can always choose to start something new.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I actually have a couple friends coming into town from overseas this fall. We’re going to go to Lightbox Expo together. I’d love to take them to some botanical gardens and the beach. But I don’t really like to hit the clubs; I’d rather go show off the Burbank library.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The North East School of the Arts, specifically my teacher Konise Millender, was an essential part of my creative development and success as a teenager. I am so grateful to have been able to go through that magnet program when I was in high school.
