We had the good fortune of connecting with Clara Dubau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Clara, why did you pursue a creative career?
I always had a passion for films, spending a great part my free time watching films. Films helped me develop my imaginary and I was amazed at how they could ignite all these feelings within me. When dvd’s came out and with them the “making of bonuses” I was absolutely amazed by the behind the scenes, the teams, the tech behind the magic. As a teen I had the great chance to intern on commercial tv sets and then on never wanted to do anything else but be a part of the incredibly buzzing and inspiring filmmaking world. As a writer-director it is a pursuit of craftsmanship and expression. All artistic practices are a search of meaning and connection. It is a very privileged way of life to make it your “job”, especially within our capital obsessed – grind culture and in the current political climate.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

As a filmmaker. I am always pursing a feeling that is universal through an individual and specific story while experimenting with the form and the medium. Film has codes and a grammar and playing with them, breaking them is what excites me in this creative practice. I like experimenting with different forms within the audio visual world, narrative films, documentaries, installations and love letting the languages of those various forms intertwine and inspire one another. I have worked mostly on short length projects but am excited to explore the possibilities of a longer format with my first feature film and experiment more with mixing the genres.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I had the chance to live in most boroughs of New York City, a friend’s visit always includes a lot of time spent commuting. Free art galleries in Chelsea, incredible South Eastern food in Queens followed by drinks in Bushwick. (shoutout to my friends at The Johnson’s) ending with a concert at the Brooklyn Steel.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The artistic communities I had the pleasure to meet and grow with during my studies and especially the incredibly talented filmmakers met during my MFA at NYU. We are still collaborators and friends to this day, we keep growing together as artists and professionals.
