Meet Claudia Botero

We had the good fortune of connecting with Claudia Botero and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Claudia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting a business was always in the back of my mind. One of the biggest influences in my life was my dad. He was a businessman who always told me that business was something beautiful—challenging, but incredibly rewarding. That stuck with me.
After a 25-year career as a TV news anchor and investigative reporter, I knew it was time to follow my dream. I wanted to create something that not only filled me with passion and love, but also made a difference in the lives of others. That’s how CB Designs was born.
Through my fashion bag and accessories business, I work directly with artisans—mostly indigenous women from Colombia and Mexico. My goal is to uplift their craftsmanship and traditions while also providing economic opportunities for them and their families. Sustainability is also a core value of my brand. Every piece is handcrafted using natural fibers, honoring both the artisans’ heritage and our planet.
For me, CB Designs isn’t just about selling products; it’s about storytelling—bringing the beauty of these traditions to the world and ensuring that they continue for generations to come.
What should our readers know about your business?
CB Designs is more than just a fashion brand—it’s a celebration of culture, craftsmanship, and sustainability. I work directly with artisans, mostly indigenous women from Colombia and Mexico, to create handcrafted bags and accessories using natural fibers. Every piece is a testament to their talent, tradition, and artistry. What sets CB Designs apart is the deep connection between the product and the people behind it. This isn’t mass production,; it’s a labor of love that uplifts communities while bringing unique, high-quality pieces to my customers.
Before launching CB Designs, I spent over 25 years in TV news, earning a Peabody Award and 10 Emmys for my work as an anchor and investigative reporter. I was proud to serve my Southern California community by informing, educating, and empowering through storytelling. But I always had another dream waiting in the wings.
Starting a business in design—without a background in fashion—was intimidating. With just a pencil and paper, I sketched my first bag, and that moment fueled my passion to keep going. Every design became a challenge and an inspiration, pushing me to grow and refine my craft.
One of the most beautiful surprises in this journey has been the support of other women entrepreneurs. Some guided me on where to sell, while others generously offered their boutiques to showcase my products. But even with that encouragement, I faced moments of imposter syndrome—not being a trained designer or having formal business experience. Over time, I’ve learned that we can’t let fear or uncertainty stop us from following our dreams.
Bootstrapping my business has been one of the biggest challenges, but the reward is immeasurable. Every time a customer tells me how much they love the quality and craftsmanship of my products, it reaffirms why I started CB Designs in the first place. This business is not just about fashion; it’s about storytelling, empowerment, and keeping beautiful traditions alive.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A Tour of Culture, Food, and Fun
Los Angeles and Southern California have so much to offer—it’s almost impossible to choose! This region is a foodie’s paradise and a cultural treasure trove, so I’d plan a trip that highlights its diversity, beauty, and, of course, incredible food.
Day 1: Coastal Bliss & Art
We’d start the morning with a scenic hike—either along the breathtaking trails of Rancho Palos Verdes or in the Santa Monica Mountains. After working up an appetite, we’d head to a cozy café in Manhattan Beach for breakfast, followed by a leisurely walk along The Strand, taking in the ocean views and beach vibes.
From there, we’d dive into the arts with a visit to The Getty Center or The Getty Villa, where stunning architecture meets world-class art collections. We’d take our time exploring, soaking in both the art and the panoramic views of LA.
Day 2: Downtown LA – Culture & History
A day in Downtown LA is a must! We’d start at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels or visit Nuestra Señora Reina de Los Ángeles (La Placita Church), a historic landmark with deep cultural roots. Then, we’d stop by the stunning Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by the legendary Frank Gehry. If the timing is right, we might even catch a play or performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion—one of LA’s most iconic theaters.
Day 3: East LA & Boyle Heights – A Taste of Tradition
For an authentic experience, we’d explore East LA and Boyle Heights, where culture and history come alive. We’d enjoy some of the best Mexican food in town—tacos, tamales, or a plate of chilaquiles—before heading to Casa 0101, a hub for local artists and performers. If we’re lucky, we’d catch a live play or art exhibition, immersing ourselves in the vibrant artistic scene.
Los Angeles is an incredible place because of its diversity, creativity, and endless opportunities for adventure. No matter what, every day would be packed with unforgettable moments, amazing flavors, and a true taste of what makes LA so special!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A huge shoutout to my dad, my mom, my husband, and my entire family! They have always been my biggest cheerleaders, supporting me every step of the way. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
They are my pillars, my strength, and my inspiration. Their unwavering belief in me has given me the courage to chase my dreams and turn them into reality. I am forever grateful for their love, encouragement, and endless support. Love them all!
