We had the good fortune of connecting with Connor Abrams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Connor, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe the issue facing creative professionals today is the lack of opportunities for upward trajectory on their career path. Staying “safe” paves the way for linear movement and passive job growth which drains all creativity and drive. Taking a risk seems daunting, but 20+ years ago, that was how you broke into the entertainment, media, and creative industry.

If I didn’t take risks I would still be in a corporate office. Was it right to leave that side of the entertainment industry and start businesses on my own? Yes, it’s been enlightening and allowed my skill set to evolve. Will I ever return to a corporate structure in the future? Maybe. That’s the point!

A creative individual should not expect their career growth to flow the same way a lawyer or financial analyst would. Opportunities are made not given.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I put together a team of creative marketers that work with apparel brands and medical/beauty services. Our eclectic career backgrounds make us a great group to work with. Our services range from digital advertising management to sales funnel optimization, web and content development.

The business started when I asked myself, how do I package our skill sets as a sellable service? A year and many experiences later we continue on, evolving and narrowing our focus.

No part of starting a business is easy. I’ll be the first to say my failed startups and pitch decks litter a hard drive. From service to product businesses, every investor meeting is another step closer to the right concept.

Right this moment my brand identity embodies one concept, “How can I help people?” Lately I have been focused on a non-profit client that saves lives. On the weekends I help young families buy homes, as a Realtor. This has lead me to make great contacts for creative video directing, a career path I started many years ago.

If there was one piece of advice I hope someone can glean for this interview is that nothing is linear. Opportunities present themselves to creatives at the right time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ll start simple, lunch spots. First, The Apple Pan on Pico. My parents used to go there in the ’70’s and it’s still an amazing place to go for a good burger and pie. Another spot would be Langer’s Deli off Alvarado downtown. Call me old-fashioned but if you want to understand old LA culture you need to visit the establishments that have seen the city grow. For attractions, probably the Getty and the Petersen Automotive Museum, both provide great viewing of amazing art and history.

I’d take my guest through the canyons out to Malibu and enjoy the beautiful beaches before dinner. This is where we’d pick between Moonshadows, which has an array of tasty options for the picky eaters, or Mastros because who doesn’t love a filet mignon.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There have been a plethora of mentors along my journey to where I am now. I think the people who have had the most impact on my life are those that challenged me. A former boss once told me I need to spread my wings and would be more successful paving my own path. He texts me every other day for updates.

You can read a book, go to a seminar, watch an entrepreneur’s YouTube video, but still not take action. For every successful creative there is a mentor that pushed them to reach their potential.
