Meet Constance Hartwell | Birth Prep Coach & Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula

We had the good fortune of connecting with Constance Hartwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Constance, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always wanted a career that would incorporate everything that I am passionate about; yoga, ayurveda, and being of service. With my doula business, I get to create beautiful relationships with birthing people while introducing them to sacred wisdom. My goal has always been to nurture every part of the body for a safe and informed experience. I use the tools of Ayurvedic self-care such as dinacharya and dosha specific yoga to help bring more balance to the body, mind, and spirit.

What should our readers know about your business?
I got really lucky in my business by teaching at a pregnancy yoga studio in Culver City. It was there that I got a taste of caring for pregnant folks and learning more about the changes that women go through during this time. I met so many students who eventually became doula clients. Honestly, I felt like I didn’t belong in this career in the beginning. I’ve never been pregnant and I was dealing with imposter syndrome heavy! Because of this, I stayed in the books. I took several yoga and Ayurveda trainings constantly learning and developing my skill set. The insecurity eventually disappeared once I realized everything I needed was within me. The wisdom of my ancestors was one call away and that gave me strength to continue. My doula business is a spirit-filled practice rooted in ancestral intelligence. Every birth is magical and beautiful and deserving of holistic care.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a huge reader so the first spot would be The Last Bookstore in Downtown LA. It’s a multi floor space with thousands of new and used books. I could literally spend hours there browsing their titles. Next, we’d go to Cafe Gratitude in the Arts District for a plant-based meal. My favorite thing to order is the black bean burger and fries. The patty is so flavorful and packed with good vibes. They have an array of smoothies, juices, mock tails, and lattes so there’s something for everyone. Then we’re off to rent bikes and ride around the city. When I was a kid, I loved spending the day downtown sightseeing and people watching. It’s such a simple but relaxing activity.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to honor my dear friend, Stacy Scates, for being such a light in my life. She is a sensitive, compassionate soul who lives from the heart.
Secondly, a huge shoutout to Keya Nkonoki for always uplifting me and being such a supportive person. She is a beam of light that I am honored to know.
Finally, I’d love to shoutout my ancestors for their constant guidance and validation. I am forever grateful for our connection.
