We had the good fortune of connecting with Corey Grand and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Corey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because it always just felt natural for me. I knew at a very young age I wanted to become a DJ and I never ignored that feeling.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always fancied the art of Djing since I was about 9yrs old. The beat juggling, on the fly remixing, and scratching, it was all just so enticing to me.
Once I was able to afford my own setup, I was connected with Keenan Williams, aka DJ Knyce, after posting a picture of my DJ equipment on Facebook. DJ Knyce had been making quite the name for himself in the city of Cleveland. He quickly took me under his wing and opened my eyes to the creative world of nightlife. Having a DJ mentor gave me so much insight as a rookie DJ. Wanting to make my mentor proud, gave me the drive to really learn the technical side of spinning records, and rocking a party while implementing both techniques together.
Being a DJ has taught me many lessons, both good and bad, but the two key lessons I take with me everyday, are to remain humble and to not overthink things. I always felt that I’m blessed to be able to do what I love everyday, so I pride myself and my brand on being genuine and not playing politics.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d definitely have to visit Momocho! One of my favorite mexican restaurants.
Hike on one of my favorite trails, Squire’s Castle. Cleveland has great metroparks.
Head to re:bar downtown for a night of eclectic music & crafted cocktails.
Watch the sunset from a rooftop near the lake.
Dig for some vinyl at Record Den.
Visit the botanical gardens, CMA, or MOCA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a ton of people who has contributed to my growth as a DJ and Producer over the years, whom I appreciate. For this shout out, I would like to dedicate to my friend Saxx Booker. She’s always been in my corner even when I’ve felt like giving up and pushed me to keep going.
