Meet Courtney Bone | ( Coco ) Fashion Stylist & Creative Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Bone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was inspired to start my business in styling because I have always had a love for personal style and self-expression. Ever since I was young, I’ve loved communicating who I am through my wardrobe, and this is what drove me to create a business that encompasses these ideals. I want to work with diverse people who come from all walks of life so I can visualize their unique personalities and stories through their wardrobes. It truly is a passion of mine to help others stand out and feel like they are their best selves, so creating a business that allows me to achieve that is very important to me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a freelance stylist based in Vancouver B.C. My career wasn’t always fashion related. I found myself working in hospitality for many years since highschool. Although this was fulfilling for me as I love meeting people and sharing stories, I felt it wasn’t creative enough so I began working in clothing stores in Victoria. Not long after working for local shops I fell into film work as a costume stylist and then also created a production company with my partner. I worked in film on and off for about 4 years and then decided I wanted to continue my creative work as a stylist with my production company and solo work. Since then I have continued to pursue projects for clients that I have met along the way and I recently graduated with a Business, Fashion, and Creative arts degree.
Something I have learnt from all of the years working in this creative and entrepreneurial industry is to keep an open mind and say YES often. You never know who you will meet and where it could take you! Also everything you do has a lesson behind it so continue to learn, live and listen.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Seeing as I grew up in Victoria I would recommend a wonderful day filled with nature, good food and community. My favorite day on the weekend would consist of waking up early, and attending a local market on Moss street in downtown Victoria. Grab a matcha at Brü Bike Café & Espresso Bar and walk along Dallas road and enjoy the beach. Lunch time, go to Hot & Cold Cafe for a Goddess salad. If you are feeling adventurous take a drive out to Sooke to hike mystic beach and then for Dinner go to Tapa Bar and have their red sangria and a share platter of nice cheeses and mussels.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Matthew Burditt (they/them) Reflecting on my journey, I’m grateful for everyone who has believed in and encouraged me to continue. Although one person stands out to me in this regard, that being my styling professor from JCI. Matthew’s guidance motivated me in both a professional and personal sense. This industry can be unforgiving to anyone starting out, so having the support of someone I look up to has made a pivotal impact on my motivation.
