We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Aragon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
Success to me is not defined by material but more so a feeling. Being able to feel peace, happiness and security within yourself with the decisions you’ve made because they have made life easier for myself and my family.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I come from Watts, California, a place that taught me strength, survival, and the importance of community. Growing up in humble beginnings, I learned early on that nothing would be handed to me—I had to work for it, hustle for it, and believe in it long before anyone else did. That mindset became the foundation of everything I’ve built today.

I’m now a Cosmetology and Barbering teacher, and the Co-Owner of The Velvet Crypt Salon, alongside my business partner Natalie Lopez. Our salon is more than a place for beauty—it’s a creative sanctuary where self-expression, inclusivity, and alternative style thrive. We built this space for those who never felt seen in traditional salons, and we’re proud to be a part of shifting what the beauty industry looks like.

The path wasn’t easy. From navigating limited opportunities to breaking into an industry that doesn’t always reflect where I come from, I had to push through doubts—both from others and within myself. But I kept going. I pursued my licenses, dedicated myself to the craft, and later to teaching, because I wanted to give back what I wish I had: guidance, support, and a belief that you can come from anywhere and still make it.

Teaching allows me to pour into the next generation of stylists and barbers, showing them that they have a place in this industry no matter their background. I’m most proud of being able to say, “I started with nothing—and now I’m helping others build something.”

I want the world to know that The Velvet Crypt isn’t just a salon. It’s a movement. It’s about honoring individuality, breaking molds, and celebrating beauty in every form. And as a co-owner, educator, and artist, I’m committed to making this industry more inclusive, more fearless, and more real—one student, one client, and one story at a time.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If its a girls get together we are for sure doing a food and wine tasting! I would definitely do a wine safari best of both worlds! I would also do some light shopping and maybe even a little spa day. But to be honest if its one of my close girlfriends even if we had a pizza, movie and wine we would have the best of times.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to dedicate this to my kids, for being my motivation and reason to always push myself beyond measures. For keeping me grounded and always reminding me my why. I want to thank my Husband Dorian Aragon for being behind me every step of the way. For being my biggest supporter, my confidant, peace and motivation this journey would have not been what it is or at least not half as interesting if it had not you in it. And to my business partner Natalie lopez for taking this journey with me.
