We had the good fortune of connecting with D Santos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi D, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I acquired Life’s Short Picnic, I knew there would be no work-life balance. I had to rebuild from the ground up, creating systems and processes that had never been in place. There was a long list of tasks that needed attention to ensure we could deliver the best service possible. It demanded my full focus, and days turned into months before I even noticed. This intense pace continued for almost two years as I worked to build the business, establish efficient systems, and develop the team and infrastructure that drive our success today. Now I work between 5-10 hours a day, 5-6 days a week and my workload is much more manageable. I really enjoy what I do and I’m obsessed with the journey so I thrive in this type of work life balance.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own an Event Management Company specializing in luxury picnic events and proposal arrangements. I acquired the business just under two years ago, and since then, we’ve experienced incredible growth. I was determined to drive fast growth and make us the best in the industry. I knew it would take time, so delaying my gratification and understanding that success wouldn’t come overnight was important. Now we’re starting to see the rewards. When things got tough, I knew that sales cures all. I learned how to effectively sell our exceptional service and truly understand our clients’ needs. The final piece was delivering on our promises—and we did, time and time again. This commitment has helped us become the highest-rated company in Southern California.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love visiting Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas—it’s one of my favorite spots. The beach offers a great accommodations. For a great meal, Be Good in Temecula is a top choice, with delicious drinks and a solid menu. Temecula’s wineries are always a relaxing and fun experience. And for a night out, San Diego has plenty of great lounges and clubs along with perfect weather for the nightlife scene.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My team. The feedback I receive from my team is incredibly rewarding. I make it a point to share my vision for the business and our plans for growth with everyone. I always keep their input in mind and strive to create an environment where they can grow both personally and professionally, alongside the business. They have such an amazing attitude and I really enjoy keeping us busy so they can have work to do.
