We had the good fortune of connecting with Daeun Cho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daeun, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Well, while I don’t technically own a traditional business, I do consider myself an independent contractor and a solo-business person in the field of dance. My journey into this role wasn’t something I initially planned for when I began my dance career. At the start, I simply had a passion for dancing and wanted to hone my skills.
Over time, as I underwent professional training and gained substantial knowledge in dance, I started to realize the potential of becoming an independent contractor in the dance industry. The confidence I gained in my dance abilities, coupled with my expanding expertise, led me to believe that I could offer valuable services to those looking to hire a skilled dancer or dance instructor.
Currently, I’m actively engaged as a dancer in the vibrant scene of New York City, and I’m committed to furthering my career in the future. While I may not have a traditional business, I see myself as a successful artist in the making, with the determination to provide my expertise to those who appreciate the art of dance. So, my thought process evolved from a simple passion for dance to realizing the potential of establishing myself as a qualified professional in the dance world.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey in the world of dance has been a unique and transformative one, originating in South Korea and unfolding over the past four years in the United States. I didn’t start as a professional dancer; in fact, my dance journey commenced when I was 19 years old. My early training took place at Kookmin University’s dance club, “BUSTA,” where I first delved into waacking and house dance.
As time passed, I decided to broaden my horizons by experiencing the vibrant dance scene in New York. This meant learning contemporary and jazz dance, prerequisites for applying to an international student program at Peridance. These styles not only expanded my repertoire but also deepened my understanding of movement.
My professional path led me to three years of intensive training at Peridance, where I had the opportunity to immerse myself in various dance styles, including Horton, Graham, tap dance, afro dance, heels dance, ballet, contemporary jazz, and choreography. The rigorous schedule of 3-5 classes a day challenged me, but it ultimately propelled my growth as a dancer.
Post-graduation, I navigated auditions for dance gigs, experiencing both acceptance and rejection. Each outcome taught me valuable lessons and prompted self-reflection. Eventually, I earned a spot in “The Fabulous Waack Dancers,” a waacking dance company founded by Princess Lockerooo. This opportunity has been instrumental in elevating my dance career and refining my skills as a dancer and instructor.
Living in New York as a limited visa holder came with its challenges, especially concerning finances. While I had the option to work using my OPT, it was restricted to jobs related to my major, dance. Fortunately, my parents’ unwavering support in covering my rent and living expenses has been a blessing I’m deeply grateful for.
One profound lesson I’ve learned along this journey is the power of perseverance. There were moments when I doubted my skills and questioned the worth of staying in New York, especially during the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, I chose to keep pushing forward, staying committed to my craft. This dedication has rewarded me with opportunities, including judging freestyle dance battles and gaining recognition in the dance community.
In essence, my dance journey is a testament to the principle of “Just Do It.” Despite doubts and obstacles, I’ve continued to pursue my passion, and the experiences and opportunities that have followed have reinforced my belief in the value of dedication and unwavering determination. My hope is that the world sees not only my growth as a dancer but also the resilience and commitment that underpin my dance journey.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have the privilege of having several individuals and groups from both South Korea and the United States whom I would like to dedicate shoutouts to, as they’ve played significant roles in my journey.
First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to my very first waacking teacher, Waackxxxy. She’s the one who ignited my passion for dance and set me on this incredible journey. Additionally, I’d like to recognize Lip J, Wacoon, and Jaesang, my mentors in waacking and house dance. Waackxxxy honed my technical skills, Lip J and Wacoon nurtured my expressive abilities, while Jaesang refined my footwork and body flow in dance.
In the United States, I owe a massive shoutout to Princess Lockerooo and the entire Peridance faculty during my time there. Princess Lockerooo, the globally renowned Queen of Waacking, not only captains the company I’m currently part of but also plays a pivotal role in advancing my dance career and assisting with important visa paperwork. The Peridance faculty collectively contributed to my growth as a dancer, imparting diverse dance styles and techniques.
Lastly, I’d like to extend my gratitude to the vibrant NYC dance community. This community not only provides a safe and supportive space for dancers but also welcomes me as a friend. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in my journey, and I’m truly thankful for their camaraderie and encouragement.
