Meet Dan Jamieson | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Jamieson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dan, what is the most important factor behind your success?
You already have an idea and intrigue of what they might be from the brand name, and then the written text on the handmade ceramic plates can equally shock, amuse and delight.
They appeal to people as they’re blunt, honest, direct and charmingly crass – don’t say it to their face, say with a hate plate instead.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It took a few years to get to where I am today with making them and it is amazing that they have proved so popular. I have to pinch myself a lot.
I started making the hate plates during my lessons at a beautiful ceramics studio, Turning Earth, near me in Walthamstow, London. I was encouraged when they sold out at a show I did with Ocki Magill at her gallery, Blue Shop Cottage.
During lockdown, the studio did re-open after a while, so I was able to start making new hate plates and then start to promote them over instagram and sell through my website shop and some online markets at the time (another lockdown project).
I was encouraged from the reactions and sales I got, to make more and experiment with more direct, blunt and ‘oh my, does that say what i think it says’ text that I scratch in to the clay.
I am looking forward to launching new hate plates this month and am excited to show people what is coming up. You can see more over my instagram, @dandanjamieson – and check out my website, dandanjamieson.com to see new works as they come available.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Then cocktail at Bar Américain, followed by bowling and a pitcher of beer at Rowan’s.
Next a karaoke session at our favourite Walthamstow place – Trades Hall.
Grab a bite to eat at Etles – amazing Uyghur cuisine and BYOB too – with some more drinks, dancing and records at our place – then a cab to Moth Club to continue the night.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like a shoutout to Maria Morrow of Air Contemporary Gallery who saw the potential in my hate plates and started exhibiting them this year and introducing them to the London art scene and beyond.
We have exhibited 4 times together in 2022 and helped the hate plates snowball. I am super grateful.
I’d also like a shoutout to my wife, Rachel, for getting me ceramics lessons a few years ago (when I saw the apron, I thought it was a cookery class). She helped start the journey that took me to making the hate plates and is a mammoth help with keeping things organised and running smoothly.
Lastly, a big shoutout to everyone who has bought hate plates so far. You are all awesome. Thank you.
