We had the good fortune of connecting with Dana Brody and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dana, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My work/life balance has definitely changed over time, but definitely for the better! I used to work long nights in the office, but it was fine, because that was my main focus. Everything changed once I had my first son, Cameron, who will be 10 at the end of March. During my pregnancy, I lost one of my best friends in a hit and run accident and for better or worse, it grounded me in the sense that I knew from that moment on, how fleeting and fragile life can be and I knew that time with my new baby was my number one priority. You never get that time back and I was keenly aware of that fact. I worked from home with him for the first 6 months of his life, no nanny, just me and Cameron and it was wonderful. We developed a very strong bond and I am so grateful to have the kind of career that allowed me the time and space to do that. I was still working on deals, of course, but I was able to pump the brakes a bit to allow the time I need to put my energy into my newborn son. I did the same when my second son, Colby, was born 4 years later. I was able to stay and work from home with him for the first 18 months of his life, and it was such a wonderful gift of time. I still worked, and was and am still so grateful I had chosen a career path that allowed me the ability to both be the kind of mother I wanted to be while also still moving my commercial real estate business forward.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to my mentor and first boss in the commercial real estate world, Laurie Lustig-Bower. She hired me at the age of 22 to be her assistant, which within about 2 months, I turned into her cold calling business development director! She gave me the platform as well as the space and freedom to use her well known name to make calls and get meetings she would come to me on and help close the business! My first deal was a $20 million 100 unit condo conversion deal in Canyon Country. I found the deal, found the buyer, negotiated the fee, did all the property inspections, and closed the deal! Without her platform and team, I don’t think any of it would have been possible, and I am eternally grateful to Laurie for giving me the opportunity to be on her team and start my commercial real estate career!
