We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Shurinov and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my practice is the emphasis that I place on surrounding myself with more skilled and knowledgeable people. This environment not only encourages but pushes to work harder and learn more.
During site visits and construction observations, I constantly encourage myself to ask subcontractors and trades questions, even though I might think that I know the answer.
This approach allowed not only to accelerate the development of the firm but lay the strategic direction for the company.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a founder and principal of an architecture firm. The firm focuses on designing highly crafted projects. We are a young firm, but what sets my practice apart is the commitment to support clients throughout the entire process. Building something is a deeply personal and it is a unique journey, especially with our residential projects. Rather than solely focusing on delivering the approved design, we prioritize flexibility and responsiveness. It’s inevitable that challenges will arise during construction and that clients may change their mind. However, our ability to quickly devise solutions and make immediate adjustments – sets me and my team apart. We ensure that our clients feel supported and confident, every step of the way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here’s how I would do a perfect day in LA with my friend. We would start the day in Tartine in Santa Monica. Not only a perfect breakfast place by really a tremendous example of architectural conservation. Next, we would head to Culver City Junction. A few hours wondering among Eric Owen Moss’ ambiguous masterpieces would end with a lunch in a Destroyer. Then I would head to LACMA, spend a few hours there, and finish the day in Fanny’s at the Academy Museum, getting their world famous martini.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The book that changed my perception of architecture is ‘Get Your House Right’ by Marianne Cusato and Ben Pentreath. It just took my interest in a direction I never expected. It enriched my appreciation for proportions, order and classical details.
