We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Silbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For 10 years I was in a band called Steel Train. We toured 9 months out of the year and the band always came first. That was the way it had to be at the time, and then when I fell in love with photography I realized that I wanted to explore this creative outlet on my own. I never looked back
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am extremly passionate about film photography. It is my medium of choice for taking photos. There is a tangability and quality that film has that I think is lost with digital. I have a full darkroom in my basement where I develop, scan and print my work. In the beginning of my process it was extremely frustrating learning how to develop film. It was a process that I knew noting about but thanks to good friends and dedication I was able to learn from my many mistakes. The greatest lesson I taught myself was don’t strive for perfection. It is the imperfections that are beautiful.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In the beginning of my career I had to learn everything on my own. I had to make my own mistakes and learn quickly from them. It wasn’t untill 2019 that I met my friend Jean Francois Campos. During lockdown we FaceTimed and chatted frequently and I began my deep dive into film. His guidance and mentorship was extremely informative and inspiring.
