Meet Daniel Smith | Creative Director and Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Art allows me to navigate the tension between feeling deeply and existing quietly. Growing up, I often felt like I was absorbing the world’s chaos without knowing how to release it. That tension left me to feel like a passive participant in the world. As an artist, I could actively make the choice to turn anxiety and stress into the building blocks of something special. This offers a paradoxical sense of freedom and control, where I can release what’s inside but also shape it in a way that feels intentional and satisfying.
I tried and failed working without creating several times. After finishing my studies, I briefly tried working as an assistant at a production company, hoping to be closer to the creative industry. However, I quickly found myself feeling empty and unfulfilled, trapped in a role that involved answering phones and scheduling meetings. I barely lasted three months. In my free time, I kept returning to illustration because it was the most authentic way for me to communicate. In a world where words often fall short, putting pencil to paper felt like the truest expression of who I was.
During particularly difficult times, especially the pandemic, art was my constant—something I could rely on. Sharing it, not for attention but to simply have it exist, connected me to a community of like-minded creators. Ultimately, the decision to pursue art as a career was less about choosing it and more about realizing it was always the only path I could take.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a reflection of my journey, merging my personal experiences with a deep curiosity about the world around me. What sets me apart is my ability to blend surrealism with elements of whimsy, creating pieces that evoke both wonder and introspection. I’m particularly proud of my ability to translate complex emotions into visual narratives, often exploring themes of duality and transformation. Each piece serves as a glimpse into a world where reality and fantasy intertwine, inviting viewers to engage with their own emotions and interpretations.
Getting to where I am today has certainly been a winding path. It hasn’t always been easy; I’ve faced my share of uncertainty and self-doubt, especially early on when I was trying to carve out my identity as an artist. I began my journey with a foundation in traditional art, which gradually evolved into digital illustrations and animations. Each transition came with its own challenges, requiring me to adapt and embrace new techniques while staying true to my vision. I learned that resilience is key; instead of letting setbacks deter me, I used them as opportunities for growth.
One significant lesson I’ve learned is the importance of community. Throughout my journey, I discovered that connecting with other artists and creatives is invaluable. Their support has not only inspired me but also reminded me that we’re all in this together. I want the world to know that my art is a celebration of the complexities of life—an invitation to embrace the beautiful messiness that comes with being human. My story is about finding joy and purpose through creativity, and I hope my work resonates with others who feel similarly drawn to explore the interplay between emotion and imagination.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting for a week, I’d curate an itinerary that captures the essence of Los Angeles, blending nature, art, food, and music. We’d kick things off with a hike at Griffith Park, soaking in stunning views of the city with my dog before indulging in a delicious Taiwanese breakfast at Huge Tree Pastry in Monterey Park. Next, we’d dive into the vibrant murals and galleries of DTLA’s Arts District, stopping for lunch at one of the local cafés. In the afternoon, we could unwind at Echo Park, enjoying some people-watching by the lake and grabbing a classic LA street taco from a nearby truck. Dinner would be at Masa in Echo Park for their amazing vegan deep-dish pizza, followed by an evening of KBBQ at Road to Seoul.
On another day, we’d explore Ascot Hills for a scenic hike and then delve into Silver Lake’s eclectic café culture, mingling with the creative crowd. I’d also want to take my friend to one of the underground warehouse parties that showcase LA’s vibrant queer culture, offering a taste of the city’s unique nightlife. We’d round out the week with a concert at the Hollywood Bowl or The Greek.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to dedicate this to my boyfriend, Tim Le. Tim has been an invaluable part of my artistic journey. From the very beginning, he encouraged me to explore my creativity and embrace my unique style. Navigating the uncertainty of my early career was challenging, but Tim was always there to provide emotional support and practical advice. Whether brainstorming ideas for a new project or being a sounding board for my panic, he listened intently and offered insightful feedback.
Beyond his personal support, Tim’s professional accomplishments are truly impressive. He directed Portola, one of the most exciting music festivals out there, and has contributed to major events like Splash House and Coachella. He brings a rare blend of creativity and logistical prowess to the table, which has a profound impact on the events he helps orchestrate.
What I admire most about him is his ability to uplift those around him. His genuine kindness and magnetic personality can light up any room, making people feel valued and understood. Tim celebrates every milestone in my work, no matter how small, and he shares in my joy with genuine enthusiasm. It’s this unwavering belief in my potential that fuels my passion and drive. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in both life and art.
