We had the good fortune of connecting with Darius “D-Win” Winfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Darius “D-Win”, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking is essential for growth; though daunting, you can’t reap the rewards unless you venture outside your comfort zone. I’m only at my current success thanks to many risks I’ve taken. Risk-taking has been central to my life and career. Moving to Chicago was the most significant risk I ever took; recently graduating high school, working at Deveroes, and starting college at IUPUI, I didn’t hesitate to heed Prosper’s call and road trip up to the Windy City. As a result, I dropped out of college and enrolled in the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago, and started taking music seriously. Two years later, myself and Lance Skiiiwalker (The Rocketeers) earned a MTVu Woodie Award nomination and were featured on MTV. Had I stayed at home, these results would have never been possible.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m proud and thrilled of my progress in design and music. Listening to my music from the past year plus and my recent output is truly remarkable! I’m excited to have gotten to meet my nephew a month ago. My art covers many topics: playing instruments, rapping, and designing in college. I made it thanks to believing in myself and not caring about others’ opinions. I’m not afraid to take risks and make sure I’m in charge of every situation. It hasn’t been easy, as most people won’t help me, but it’s building me up to be a boss and helping me to trust the process more. One of the main lessons I’ve learned is to never forget to treat others with respect. You never know who’s in front of you and badmouthing someone can lead to bad outcomes. I’m doing all this to provide my family with better resources. I want to show that you can make it from the Midwest and all things are possible through Christ.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to The Hideaway in Beverly Hills for good food. I would take them to the Hollywood walk of frame, and show them the tourist stuff in Hollywood, I would take them down Sunset Blvd and show them all the cool clothing stores.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am forever grateful to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Growing up, I stayed in church and did not have the chance to go to concerts, smoke, or drink. But as I got older, I wanted to see what the outside world held. After returning to the faith, I was able to look at my life with a new perspective. Nothing can compare to being saved and living for the Lord. Matthew 6 14-15 “14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” – a scripture that always reminds me to forgive and let peace prevail.
