We had the good fortune of connecting with Dasmin Cloe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dasmin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’m Haitian, so naturally I was exposed to some of the most beautiful art, food and music. My family was always very big on capturing moments throughout generations. I grew up with hundreds and hundreds of family photos from my great grandmother to my baby sisters, Becoming a film photographer, felt so organic to me because it was something that was apart of my life growing up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a black female film photographer, I faced hardships during my journey. I started digital photography officially in 2016 and quickly hated it! In 2017, I slowly transitioned to film and haven’t shot digital since! I started shooting film on my Olympus point and shoot I purchased on Etsy for $30. Fast forward to 2020, I finally decided to get 3 years worth of film developed. The first batch of scans I received made me cry because that was the first time I felt proud of myself and genuinely loved my work. Before 2022, I never felt as though I deserved the title of “photographer” because there were “real photographers” whose work blew mine out the water. There was a lot of imposter syndrome that was happening to say the least. Fortunately, for me, I had loved one constantly pushing me to stay consistent and offering to help me. At the beginning of year, I told myself I’m going to start confidently introducing myself as a photographer. And I did just that! Now, I’m booking shoots that I know clients are going to love!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being Haitian in Los Angeles is very hard considering there is not one Haitian restaurant here, So the next best for me is Mexican food! I can eat Mexican food all day long! So our first stop is Angel’s in North Hollywood! Their tacos are unmatched! Next is Malibu! The drive is always the worst but the views never disappoint! We will probably have a shopping trip at some point throughout the week so we have to hit vintage shops and flea markets!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I want to shoutout God! Next, I want to shoutout my family! My parents specifically because they have always been super supportive of everything I do. Lastly, I want to shoutout my friends for always believing in me and supporting my work. I tend to get a little insecure about my work but lucky for me I’m surrounded by love and people who want to see me win.
