We had the good fortune of connecting with David Alan Madrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David Alan, what are you inspired by?
I am first and foremost inspired by my mom who is smart, caring and one of the funniest people I have am blessed to know. Her outlook on life and the way she unconditionally supports all of my dreams literally puts a battery in my back to keep going no matter the obstacle.
I believe the 2nd thing I am inspired by is the need to fulfill my life question and mantra “What if I did do it, what is on the other side?”. As an actor I expose myself and feelings with every job I take , but in life I am a multi-faceted creative who loves to explore all avenues of this thing we call “Art”– yet it is easy to get scared, so I stay inspired by wanting to know the answer to “What if I allow myself to be great?, What would happen?”
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an Actor for both TV/ Film and Theater. I approach each character that I am given with love being built in their DNA, even down to the most ruthless characters. I want the audience to hate them but also somehow be upset that there something small that warms their soul just a bit to whom I am playing.
I have been acting for almost 10 years, and it was a lot of google, many questions to my friend Reynaldo Piniella, and many many many classes along with just throwing myself into things I have never done before. Prime example: I auditioned for Romeo and Juliet and knew nothing about Iambic pentameter, but the amazing Director Arpita Muhkherjee actually booked me for Tybalt and then taught me the way of Shakespeare. Professionally today , I am a recurring on Tyler Perry show Ruthless on BET+, have been on Blackish, wrote and executive produced my first short film “Vylet” that was also Directed and Executive produced by Alexandra Shipp, but you asked was it easy? Ha.. I am still on this journey, but it can be a lot at times yet it is easy because I love what I do.
I have truly learned that God always has a plan even if you cant see it, and preparation meeting opportunity is the best pairing I have been blessed to witness.
I want the world to know that a young boy from Queensbridge Housing in New York City has every plan on being one of the great names listed next to Nas from our neighborhood
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to the Soho house DTLA because it is such a vibe, hopefully Everyday people is happening that weekend because that would be amazing to attend as well. We would definitely be hitting Queensberry DTLA for Legendary Damon nights , and probably swing over to this Taco truck that literally fills my spirit with so much joy. Also everyone has to experience the beach , so we would definitely be heading to Dockweiler for a moment of relaxation in the sun.
Harriets and the West Hollywood Edition are both amazing places in LA that people must experience at least once! Also Good Times at Davy Waynes .. there are literally so many amazing places here in Los Angeles you definitely need more than a week.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my Shoutout to my mom; Madeline, my sister Raziya, and my bestfriend Karleen Brookshire. They have attended every play, every short film screening, and have listened to me complain but also celebrated my wins! I love you very much
