We had the good fortune of connecting with David C. Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David C., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started Film Fight Fitness because I enjoy teaching and helping people. I wanted to combine my years of being a certified personal trainer with my experience as a stage combat instructor. I realized a lot of performers lacked some of the strength and mobility necessary to perform high level on screen action be it with their hands and feet or with a weapon. In one on one training, I can give a more customized routine for specifically what kind of fighting movement they want to achieve.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Most recently I’ve gotten more recognition for my action performances. A few videos that have gone viral across a few social platforms are unique with their character development and action sequencing all shot as a oner (no cuts). It forces creativity in the choreography of the fighters involved as well as the complex camera movement. I made the decision at the beginning of the year to immerse myself at more creative spaces and JAM (Joining All Movement) is the spot where I ended up meeting a lot of my collaboration team. It was difficult at first because even though I had all these years of experience under my belt, no one knew who I was or what I was capable of because I hadn’t overcome my impostor syndrome and I hadn’t displayed any my talents because of some terrible advice. I put my faith and career into some of the wrong people and it took a long time to shake off the frustration I had with myself for allowing myself to be duped for so long.
Thankfully, when I finally separated myself, a lot of people were there to support me on working independently, telling me how talented I was, and really bolstering my confidence.
I’m doing my best overcoming the daily of being a creative and a business owner. I’ve learned that honesty with yourself and surrounding yourself with honorable people are essential. Also, no one knows what you are capable of until you tell them or show them. Everyone had their own path and that’s okay.
I want Film Fight Fitness and ActionPathApp.com to be known for safety, consistency and boosting confidence. I want to be known for helping and connecting. We’re all in it together.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The cool thing about LA is the accessibility to diversity. Visiting The Natural History Museum and The Peterson are always a good time. Angel’s Tijuana Tacos or Cactus Cantina are essential. Probably catch some karaoke at Residuals or Tiki No. Maybe catch a play at Pantages or the Taper. A day at Universal Studios is always fun. Definitely go check out some cars at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank on a Friday. Go to the archery range at Roving Archers in Pasadena. Probably hit up Academy for some dancing too. Also, I can’t forget pool at Brickyard.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely wouldn’t be here without Megan Le. She’s an amazing friend and fantastic performer. We attended The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood together. We were also on the same fight team for a number of years. Megan is actually the one who initially inspired me to become a personal trainer. She’s had an amazing acting and stunt career thus far and does it all while being a wife, a mother of 2, and has a non profit organization.
