We had the good fortune of connecting with David Hicok and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I believe it was a calling for me. Sounds dramatic, but I never felt like someone who wanted to work for someone else and play by their rules. I remember from my very first job in high school in a sporting goods store I thought about if it were my store how I would do things differently. Not sure I’d be a good employee these days after 30 years of being a business owner.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our business offers financial planning, advice and investment management for a fee. We believe that everyone has the right to know how their investments have performed over the past month, year or decade, what those investments cost and what risk there is in the investments. We find that this is not common in the financial services marketplace. I am proud of the fact that we offer objective advice at a fair price and that we always put our clients first. Starting out I found it difficult to deliver on that promise when I was working for large financial firms. It took me over 15 years to build the business as I wanted without the inherent conflicts that are so prevalent in finance. If there was one thing that I would want people to know is that they can have an advisor who puts their needs first, last and always.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are several areas we like to bring people from out of town. We love the Retro Row area of Long Beach near 4th and Cherry. Some of our favorite restaurants and shops are there, Lolas, Social List, Prime by Shenandoah and Wide Eyes Open Palms just to name a few. There are also great shops like Trebor Nevets for mid-century modern furniture and design, Retroda Past and Present for fun gifts and novelty items and East 4th Skate for cool tees and shirts. Everyone should go to shop and hangout by the Pike for shopping, great food choices and exploring the harbor. Plan to spend a day on Second St. on Long Beach between Livingston and Bay Shore. There is a whole day of activities there from shopping, to dining to hanging out in the bay. That’s three days just in Long Beach! But the one place you must check out is The Hangar near Long Beach Airport for food , shops and a casual atmosphere.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There have been so many it is hard to name just one. Each mentor came along at a different time in my life and a different phase of my development. The University of Redlands where I received my degree in business. I met so many great people and had many teachers that made a big impact. For those interested in being an entrepreneur there is no better place to start than TheE-Myth: Why Most Small Businesses Don’t Work and What to do About it.
