We had the good fortune of connecting with David Kearse and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
After performing in G&S’ “HMS Pinafore ,” at age 4, I wanted more — applause, music, role playing. And all that led to the Annapolis Children’s Theater, U.S. Naval Academy Navy Relief shows and the Ring Theater at the University of Miami. There I majored in drama, with a minor in radio-TV-film.

Now with David Kearse Productions in Hollywood, I write screenplays and books— a memoir and two novels. I have also acted in TV series and films.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
A new film producer, whose background is in development and the TV Academy, optioned my musical biopic about a major world class entertainer. My background and passion remain in music and drama.

I grew up in the Golden Age of Broadway, when Ray Bolger was tap dancing across the street from “South Pacific” and Celeste Holm filled in for Gertrude Lawrence in “The King and I.” On 46th Street, “Guys and Dolls” knocked ‘em dead. I was seduced by Rodger’s & Hart’s “Pal Joey. “

Thus my affinity for musicals on stage — and screen.

As a screenwriter, I have also written four other screenplays, three of them dramas and another, a comedy.

My book authoring began with “Blessed By The Best,” recounting my life struggles and recovery, successes and training by some of the world’s greatest.

Two novels, based on screenplays, followed. All of my books can be bought on Amazon and Apple Books.

I am pleased to offer an occasional blog, By David Kearse, on WordPress, and podcast on Spotify.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s take a trip together, one I have always enjoyed. Let’s go north from Los Angeles, up the coast to Santa Barbara, and stay at a small hotel on State Street. Dinner will be at the refined San Ysidro Ranch.

Then it’s onward by car to San Francisco, everybody’s favorite town. We will stay at that small Chinese hotel on Grant Avenue, in the heart of Chinatown and eat Italian at North Beach.

Our trip continues to Healdsburg, capital of the Russian River, with a splash in the hotel swimming pool followed by dinner in an upscale restaurant in the town square.

Next day, we get joined for lunch at Sonoma Mission Inn with old friends from Healdsburg and after they leave, take a massage and swim in the venerable old hotel’s celebrated spa.

Nice trip, don’t you think?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Pearl Tuttle Cooper, a concert pianist herself and married to one, taught me that great piano playing is informed by all of the arts — paintings, ballet, theater. With her, I learned to play Chopin’s athletic “Revolutionary “ Etude, Mozart and more.

Harold Clurman, Broadway director, Frank Corsaro, head of the Actors Studio, and Alan Arkin, the actor, and his wife, all influenced my life.
