We had the good fortune of connecting with David Regoso and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
As an artist I believe risk taking plays such a huge factor to becoming successful not only with art, but also in life. By taking risks, we put ourselves into the realm of knowing what works and what doesn’t, rather than just dreaming because if we don’t take risks, chances are we’ll keep seeing the same results when we continue to remain stagnant without challenges and failure. When we learn and grow from the past challenges and failure, that is how we know the risk was worth it. We build from the small wins and eventually it’ll keep growing with the right mindset. Just recently, I have had to take a huge risk in my life/career that wasn’t easy to make. Prior to being a full time creative, I worked at a hospital for 4 years in Downtown LA as a Sterile Processing Technician in the surgery department where I had to sterilize and prep and pack surgical instruments. Working at the hospital wasn’t my cup of tea as it was taking a lot of time away for myself and also affecting my health due to the overwhelming stress. It was a stable job with good benefits, but I didn’t have the time to do creative work anymore so I ended up resigning and took a big risk to pursue being a full time creative. I knew it wouldn’t be easy at first financially, but with more opportunities and hard work I know I can be the person I envision myself to be.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a photographer I wouldn’t say being a creative is easy, it was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be compared to when I first started. Aside from the creative side there’s also the business side to it and with business, it means a lot of good communication is required for you and your dreams to succeed. I was an introvert growing up and there were a lot of missed opportunities that I passed on just because I was shy or I didn’t believe in myself and as an introvert, we tend to overthink ALOT. It wasn’t until I was at the Nike store one day and saw an ad that said, “It’s only a dream until you do it.” and as corny as it seems, it’s what actually woke me up and gave me inspiration to “Just Do It” because nobody is stopping you but yourself. It took awhile for me to develop that positive mindset and I had to mentally teach myself that there is always something good that you can get out of in any type of situation you’re in and it’s not always the end, but there is something better and to always strive for better, never be content. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I’m proud I’m not where I used to be.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Tourist spots are overrated, I would take them to Bluff Cove and Abalone Cove in Rancho Paolos Verdes near Long Beach which is low key known for its spectacular and expansive view of the Pacific Ocean. Those places are nice places to hang out, hike, and just chill at the coves while your view is the ocean. As for food, it depends as there are many good options around LA such as Moodaepo KBB2 in Koreatown, Road to Seoul, The Hangar in Long Beach, Sonoratown Tacos in Downtown LA, and there is boba everywhere but the best ones are in the 626!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I believe everyone that I have met the past few years has had an impact in my creative life. From clients and creative homies and that I’ve met in Manila, New York, here in LA, we all just talk about experiences and try to help each other out throwing in ideas how to do this and that, etc. When the homies win, we all win and I believe I’ve surrounded myself with the right people who continue to have a positive impact in my life.
