Meet Davina Colaço | Actress

We had the good fortune of connecting with Davina Colaço and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Davina, what matters most to you?
I feel like I can always rely on my integrity to guide me. I never want to be false in my relationship to my work or in my personal life. Especially being a full time artist, it’s a matter or survival in the gruelling beginning years and there are lines that can be hard to navigate. I constantly aim to remind myself of the over-arching responsibilities I have to myself and others. I want to make sure everything I put out or am in support of wholly aligns with my sense of self. And that also means, acknowledging when my beliefs change and evolve as I learn and experience new things. I don’t want to be stubborn or be blindly faithful to anything, but I do rely on certain principles to help me stay rooted.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an actor, I want to be recognized as a team player- I believe in serving the greater picture. Of course, a sense of ego has to come into play because one needs to believe that the work they put out is important and serves a purpose- if you can’t stand behind your work then why will anyone else champion its message? Whether its educational, thought provoking or just entertaining- it has to stand for something. I’m currently working on balancing my introverted nature with the necessary ego it takes to push the things that count. Sometimes it’s okay to take up space- as long as it isn’t to just fill it with hot air!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a city that lives erratically, beat by beat, it would be futile for me to contain an experience via an itinerary (and believe me I speak from experience, I love spreadsheets!) Either way, I would try to bring my friends to the crossroads of the old LA and the new. So that means instinctively sampling the classic taco trucks (Leo’s of course), but also making time for vegan burgers (Monty’s Goodburger)! I also love the feeling of watching the sunset from The Griffith. And I can’t forget gelato from Uli’s while we drive around Miracle Mile to admire the classic homes. And definitely a standup show at Stories in Echo Park or a live show at The Elysian theatre. I may even brave going down to the walk in Hollywood to snag my friend an authentic LA streetdog- all the toppings of course.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to The Blank Theatre’s 30th Anniversary Young Playwrights Festival. I’ll be starring in the 2022 series in the play, DROPLETS PELLETS BULLETS. I’m so excited to be in this piece written by Isabel Tongson (a young student playwright aged 17) and directed by Andrea Fiorentini Del Rio.

“Every summer, The Blank Theatre produces the 12 best plays by playwrights ages 9 to 19, chosen from a nationwide competition.

In the past 29 years, we’ve produced 357 plays by these young writers. Winning playwrights are provided careful mentoring and direction from industry professionals to help prepare their work for public performance and hone their skills, talent and confidence.

Nowhere else in the nation can young playwrights receive the prize of seeing their vision come to life on stage in a professional production featuring known actors from film, television and theatre. The plays are crafted by seasoned professional directors and each is given several public performances in a month-long Festival.

The Festival plays a critical role in training and supporting the next generation of theatre artists.”
