Meet Deanna Alsdorf | Nonprofit Leader & Community Changemaker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Deanna Alsdorf and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deanna, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing many outsiders may not realize about the nonprofit industry is just how entrepreneurial and strategic it truly is. While the mission is centered on service and impact, the day-to-day work often mirrors that of a startup. In many cases, one person is effectively managing what would be multiple full-time roles in a for-profit setting. Where larger companies have entire departments for fundraising, marketing, HR, and community outreach, nonprofit professionals are often their own department, juggling all of these responsibilities simultaneously. It’s a fast-paced, high-stakes environment that demands creativity, adaptability, and a deep commitment to the cause. Despite the challenges, there’s a real sense of purpose in knowing your work directly contributes to meaningful change in the community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career in the nonprofit sector began with a simple internship inquiry during my senior year of college. I wasn’t exactly sure what I was looking for, but I knew I wanted to do something meaningful. That one e-mail led me to Foothill Family Shelter, and what started as an internship quickly became a calling. I discovered a deep passion for helping families overcome homelessness and find hope again.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend heart with strategy, staying focused on the mission while managing the many complex responsibilities that come with the work. Fundraising, for me, is more than just raising money—it’s about building genuine relationships, sharing compelling stories, and inviting others to support something bigger than themselves. In a small nonprofit, wearing multiple hats is the norm. I often stepped into roles out of necessity, learning on the job with little guidance and facing steep challenges that became invaluable lessons. Being thrown into the deep end taught me to adapt quickly, solve problems creatively, and lead with confidence. I’m proud of the professional growth I’ve achieved and the impact I’ve made by staying committed.
What I want the world to know is that impact doesn’t happen by accident. It requires hard work and relentless dedication. My story is one of showing up, staying focused, and believing that every act of service, no matter the size, has the power to change lives.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to visit for a week, I’d want to show them the very best of Southern California, a blend of iconic attractions, incredible food, and peaceful escapes. We’d start with a day at the Happiest Place on Earth, immersing ourselves in the magic of the rides, fireworks, and, of course, churros!
Another day would be dedicated to experiencing the vibrant energy of Los Angeles. As a huge Dodger fan, I’d take them to Dodger Stadium for a game, soaking in the electric atmosphere. Afterwards, we’d head over to Echo Park to enjoy some of the city’s best tacos at a local favorite spot.
For a change of pace, I’d plan a day that begins with relaxation at Glen Ivy Hot Springs. After unwinding in the mineral baths and indulging in spa treatments, we’d make our way to Temecula to explore the wineries, tasting local wines while taking in the rolling hills and stunning scenery.
No visit to Southern California would be complete without some time at the beach, and Malibu is my personal favorite, the perfect place to unwind, enjoy the ocean breeze, and watch the sunset over the Pacific.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My deepest gratitude goes to my parents. Their unconditional love, steady support, and unwavering belief in me have shaped who I am. They instilled in me the values of kindness, resilience, and service. No matter what season of life I was in, they were always in my corner, reminding me of my worth and encouraging me to lead with heart.
I also want to recognize Foothill Family Shelter. During my senior year of college, I sent a simple email inquiring about an internship. That message led me to an organization that would ultimately change the course of my life. What began as a learning opportunity turned into a career filled with purpose, passion, and impact. It is where I discovered the joy of serving others and the power of community. I am forever thankful for that open door and the people who helped me walk through it.
