We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah McDonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deborah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
My entire career I have been very risk averse. I spent the totality of my numismatic life with a single company, putting one foot in front of the other to build my reputation brick by brick. However, I have had a brand-new experience with what risk-taking looks like when founding Coinfully with my sons, Travis and Wyatt. I won’t say that I wasn’t nervous with the boys starting the company from scratch and building things from the ground up, but I think any mother would have been. Then, when I saw the confidence that they had about offering collectors a truly better way to sell coins, it didn’t feel like a risk anymore and my nervousness melted away. It was always my dream that one day we would all be able to work together as a family and that dream had come true
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
It was not easy, but I am glad I stuck with it. Like I mentioned, it has been a very male dominated field and I had to work twice as hard to prove my worth. I started in the 90’s answering phones at the famous auction house Bowers & Merena and absorbed everything about numismatics that I could. Eventually I was promoted to sales director until my boss asked me to participate at a coin convention in collecting coins for the next auction. I had no idea what I was doing, I had never worked with collectors to bring their prized possessions to the auction block before. In the end, I brought in over a million dollars in coins for the auction. They made me a consignment director that very same month. In the 2000s, I was the only female consignment Director at our world-famous company.
If there is one take-away from my story I would say that perseverance and never saying no to an opportunity can help move your career in the direction you want. Even if that means you will be learning as you go.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I know some will argue with me as it’s not your typical posh SoCal outing, but Disneyland is now and forever my number one pick. In 1960, just 5 years after the park’s grand opening, my family and I drove the 3,000 miles from Boston to California to visit. My father had built a wooden bed behind the front seats of the Ford Fairlane for us kids and we made the trip in just 5 days. I was a Disney Lifer from then on. Build your own adventure, you can’t go wrong. I love the restaurants in downtown Disney and of course the classic rides in the park. Currently my go-to is to hit the Soarin’ Over California ride and grab a glass of wine in California Adventure to relax at the end of the day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to all the women in this field. Speaking about women in the coin industry is a passion of mine. Never was I involved with such a tight group of women who felt like family. You spend half the year together at shows or work, during holidays of any sort. You poured your heart out to each other on a regular basis about it being a man’s industry. All women in this business with the exception of a very few played the part of male coin dealers assistant. The handful of us that were elevated to high impact positions bonded and became a cohort of our own. Us women were not competitive with each other like the men in this business have been, we supported each other no matter what. So, I would love to dedicate my Shoutout to all the wonderful women in numismatics, past, present, and future.
