Meet Delbar Azari | Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Delbar Azari and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Delbar, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote is by Dalai Lama : “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” Starting as an emerging artist could be daunting; What else can one contribute to the art world, that the famous masters of the past and accomplished contemporary artists have not done already? Whenever I have a hard day and pessimism tries to take over, I remind myself of this quote, treat myself to my favorite snack, get a good night sleep, and continue on afresh the next day.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My fascination with color and light started at an early age; I could spend hours playing with chandelier crystals, examining the effects of light going through different facets, or spend days on end creating color swatches out of my oil pastels. But as I grew up and went to school, I realized that math and sciences come easily to me so it was only natural to follow that path and pursue an engineering degree in college. When I was a sophomore, I volunteered to drive my little brother to art lessons that were far from our house, I had to wait at the art studio for two hours to drive him home again, so I decided to take a class myself and that’s how my art journey began. After graduating from college with a bachelor of electrical engineering, I went back to school to pursue a bachelor of art. Then I immigrated to the U.S. and for practical reasons attended USC to get my masters in electrical engineering. As you can see, art and engineering are my Yin and Yang, they have to be present together and my new body of work is the result of their fusion. My current art explores the qualities of light and color. I use different reflective, translucent, and transparent materials to create a visual effect that will change based on the ambient light and one’s point of view. My artwork consists of designing, fabricating, and building, which are engineering skills. What makes my art pleasing to the viewer is the reflection and refraction of light and color that has always been my passion.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I get my inspiration from nature, so we will be spending a lot of time hiking in the beautiful Santa Monica mountains and walking on the beach. I will take her to Lake Shrine on Sunset Blvd for meditation and feeding the turtles, then we will stop at Cafe Vida in Pacific Palisades for delicious California cuisine. We will drive north on PCH, and catch the sunset at the Malibu Seafood or the Malibu Farm. I will take her to the “Mother’s Beach” to try out stand up paddle boarding and see the baby sting rays and lazy seals napping. We will spend a day at LACMA, and will stop at Chris Burden’s “Metropolis II”, even if there are no kids accompanying us. Hopefully we can get a lobster roll from the food trucks across the museum. We will go downtown to visit The Broad and Disney music hall and munch on some comfort food from street vendors then will go to Santee Alley, because no downtown visit is complete without it. Another day we will visit Hammer museum, then get Persian food from Shamshiri Restaurant and Persian Saffron ice cream from Saffron and Rose on Westwood Blvd.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My answer is going to sound cliche, but here it is: I couldn’t be as successful as I am today without the love, support, and understanding of my family, especially my husband and my two young sons.
