We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Brady, LMFT and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I wanted to show people you can be authentic. You can show up as yourself. My brand has been successful because I show people through my platform its ok to be you! I wanted to know they are enough. Whether they are having a good day or a bad, what’s most important is you are enough.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am most proud of taking a leap of faith on myself. At the start of 2019 I decided to start my private practice part-time. Who knew less than 6 months later the pandemic would happen. I had to overcome starting a business during a lockdown, working full-time, being a wife, and mom. I was trying to do it all and feeling like my full-time job did not care. I decided I was tired of having my life be in the hands of people who have no investment in me. I decided to make an exit strategy to leave 9-5. It was scary to think about walking away from steady income but I pushed the gas and taught myself how to run a private practice. I scaled my business and left my full time job in 2021.
I have learned many hard lessons. My biggest lesson has been, I am enough and I am worthy. Long as I keep believing in myself and the healing I provide for people nothing else matters. I don’t focus on what other therapists are doing, I focus on what I am doing for others.
I want people to know you are not the things you’ve been though. I am a walking example of that. Those things do not define me. And you should not let your pain define you either. We can overcome our trauma.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to the beach, followed by a nice lunch spot. Then we would do some shopping at the outlets. During the week we would go to Disneyland to embrace own inner child (no kids just us). I really enjoy tapping into local shops/markets such as the Torrance Farmers market or a cooking class on a Friday night. Sunday, we’d wake up and get breakfast at the Coffee company before dropping them off at LAX.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout out to all the Black girls out there who’ve been told they’re too much. I want every one of them who may be reading this article to know you are enough! Don’t water yourself down to fit into spaces. I also want the next generation of therapists to know it’s ok to be you in your therapy sessions and to keep decolonizing therapy.
